Hotel paid for when moving?

Options
We are moving next month, new posting, receiving DA for it.
We just had the removal man round for the survey and he has said that they will need to pack up one day, and then meet us at the new house the next day.
Im sure I saw somewhere that there was an allowance available for hotels for this, but does it have to be over a certain distance?
According to AA autoroute we are going:

Distance: 153.9 miles
Time: 3 hr 13 min

We are RAF, not that it should make a difference, but it sometimes does.

As far as I'm aware, unless the house move is abroad, there is no entitlement and disturbance allowance is used. Out of our 8 moves we've always had the removals arrive the day after they packed. If the new home is close and we have already signed for it in advance (marched in) we often take camp beds/fold up beds and kettle etc for the night before the removals arrive.

We had a similar problem moving from Wiltshire to Newcastle (325 miles) and we have to do a similar move up to Newcastle in August (300 miles) Worth looking out for Travel Lodge or other hotel offers, we use our Tesco points. may also be worth asking if there is a mess with a family room?

If we do a long distance move we pack up everything bar the essentials ie bed, kettle etc , then collect them early on the day of moving

I recently moved from Wiltshire to Scotland.
The removals told me it would take 2 days from packing the van to delivery in Scotland. I got 2 nights in a hotel, 1 room for me and the wife and a separate room for the kids paid for.
To be honest I thought I would be told 'thats what your disturbance allowance is for' but I made the enquiry anyway. A quick chat with the Chief Clerk and they agreed to pay; I even got an advance for the hotel costs.
I assume its done on a case by case basis and takes into account the distances involved, but may be worth a chat with your chief clerk.

  • yes the last poster is correct, the army must accommodate you if housing is not available but this must be booked through hogg robinson who will give you a ref number for when you make your claim on jpa as you must pay for this yourself unless you get an advance first. have the number for them in my office but im sure you will be able to get it from your CC on mon. plus you will get your DS of 24.52 per person for every 24 hours in accn/hotels for your food. Just remember to keep all your receipts.

159miles can be done in the car in under 3 hours from door-door.

Though i can understand why you dont want to be in an empty house with your things arriving the next day.

You could always dispatch your partner first to live rough in the house overnight, then you spend overnight with friends, then travel the next day.

160mile in fuel for the car is about £22-25.

Unsure how much a family hotel room would be, though travelodge are having a sale, mainly for mid-week stuff.
  • you are entitle to the same as army you have no accn for the night so are entitled to NS and DS. I give both my RAF ad Army guys this, we are meant to be joint now....although the only thing i would like to join my jpa terminal to is a rocket to the moon!!
  • You need to check the above document yourself because when you make the claim you have to tick a box saying you've read and understood it.
I have recently moved to Canada from the UK and took everything the clerk said to me as fact.
I claimed for 14 nights, through Hogg Robinson, and claimed DS at a total of £1600 as instructed by my clerk.
I arrived in Canada and I am now £1100 short because I was only entitled to 3 nights (4 nights if a Sunday) and I had ticked the box.

  • sorry to hear about the PP misfortune with this. it has always been the 3 day rule hotel costs, even from germany. Never had any experience from anyway further afield, but your clerk should have told you this when you put the advance in. I would have refused to hand back my qtr if the could move you in this timescale or accomodate you in a welfare house on camp at the other end, i know that is probably easier said than done but you shouldnt be out of pocket because you are moving especially from the other side of the world! I would have kicked up a right stink, regardless of the fact you apparently have read and understood JSP, your clerk is there to help should you not and if they advise you wrongly what hope have you got. Can you not dispute this through G1 in bde?

Firstly, you tell the removals when you want the furniture packed and delivered on the forms and on the pre-move survey with the assessor for the removals firm. They don't tell you. Its at your convenience not theirs.

Secondly, it is your entitlement to stay in a hotel for up tp 3 nights for a UK to Uk move (we had 7 for Germany to UK) I have just done it for a 120 mile move. You are also entitled to claim money back spent on meals (about £25 per person per day - need receipts) If you don't stay in a hotel you can't claim the money back so you are out of pocket. The hotel has to be booked through the central hotel booking agency, you pay on departure then claim the money back on JPA. Its been suggested to me in the past that I should see about getting a family room in the mess. I refused as my family aren't in the Army and shouldn't have to live like they are.

I always book the movers for the Mon and deliver on Wed and have three nights in a hotel. Its a bit of a mini break and the hotels are normally pretty good in my experience. By having the hotel on the Wed night you don't have the hassle of trying to put up bunk beds etc while the house is full of boxes and removals men in time for the kids to get to bed. It also gives you a day to hand over/ take over your new quarter and sort out any problems. I've known people who have been pressured into accepting an uncleaned unsuitable quarter because the removals men were sitting outside.
