All i,m trying to do is draw peoples attention to the problem. The lady above obviously thinks she has a belt fitted when, it is in fact a chain(believe me my engines in pieces i have seen it).If i can get people to check theirs and save them a huge expense, before the adjustor or guide rail snaps, surley thats a good thing. This is not an isolated incident and has happened to quite a few 3.2did cars now. I personally think that a recall will eventually be done on this car, for this problem. It is costing me over 1200 pounds to put my car back on the road, at 51,000 miles i am not impressed and hope this can be prevented for anyone reading this.
It was in fact the aa man who recovered us who told us to pursue it with mitsubishi. He said the car had not covered enough miles to warrant even a belt change.0 -
Brooker_Dave wrote: »Chains wear and need replacement just as cam belts do, as your car is 6 years old it's no real surprise MM don't care.
It's just one of those things and you'll have to either find another engine or get yours repaired.
Just shows how much knowledge of engines that you have!! A timing chain will far exceed the life of a timing belt, most manufacturers do not even have a schedule for changing of a timing chain. My car has a chain and there is no schedule for it's changing, basically if it is getting noisy then it is time to change it, my car currently has over 130k miles on the clock and many of the same type have well over 200k with no engine work needed.
So, before trying, yet again, to belittle people why not actually check up on the facts, it just might stop you looking like a total tit all the time.
To the OP, try looking to see if this is a known problem with this engine. Also, did you buy the car from a dealer? In real terms your claim is with who ever sold you the car (assuming it was not a private sale), so might be worth going down that road (no pun intended).0 -

I sell car parts for a living, including timing chains, I'll pass on your assurances that they never need to be changed to the people buying them to replace worn and failed parts.
Clearly you know considerably more about this than the rest of us."Love you Dave Brooker! x"

I don't see that you have a case here. Was this pointed out to you in the services you have had to date?

no its not a servicable part, it is really intended to remain on the engine for its lifetime. Most certainly it should last well beyond 51,000 miles but it is really the adjustor that has not performed as it should, as it has broken off causing all the damage.Mitsubishi have in the meantime released an "upgraded kit" for the timing which has a metal rather than plastic adjustor.0

Maybe you ought to learn about the product you sell then!
I never said they "Never need to be changed", I said they were not generally on a service schedule like a timing belt is. Therefore they only need changing when they start to get noisy etc, which in most cases is far in excess of 52k. In fact most timing belts are scheduled to be changed way beyond 52k, normally 72k+ or 6 years.0 -
I have an 05 Shogun 3.2 which has done 125k miles and been main dealer serviced every year and there was no engine noise or warning sounds. Last week my timing chain snapped on the M4.
The dealer wants £1000 just to strip it down and tell me how much extra I will have to pay for the damage this has caused. As far as he is concerned he wants me to pay for his mechanics time just to give me a quote.
All he could say was that it may be £1000 minimum with anything up to £4500 if they replace the engine.
I have had to tell him to go ahead and start the work as I need my car.

As you are replying to a post that is two years old, I would hope distan's problem has been sorted by now.Gone ... or have I?0
