Do it free online:

I also subscribe to Ancestry.co.uk for access to UK data. If I need to look at usa/canada worldwide data, (usually indicated by a request to upgrade my subscription!) I make a note of the record and go to my local library which has full access to the whole Ancestry database.
My local library also has a computer database of old wills for the district dating from some really early stuff (12th century) and also a local family history project. It's worth checking what's at your local library.
Localised genealogy groups or historical groups where your family comes from can be helpful, sometimes these are listed in the library too.

I know this isn't strictly what the thread requests but.
If you want to do some serious Family History research
If you want good software for XP/Vista
If you intend to use Ancestry.co.uk for research (possibly the best).
Buy Family Tree Maker 2009 Platinum Edition
It is currently £34.97 (at Amazon.co.uk) and with it comes 6 months Essentials membership to ancestry.co.uk.
Current cost of membership: Annual £6.95 a month (when single annual payment of £83.40 is made)
Whichever way you look at it you've got a bargain.
For those who already have membership the code which comes with the software will add 6 months Essentials membership to your current subscription.
Hope this is useful.

Hi Maggie. There is Gramps. It was first develped for the Linux operating system but is now availabel for Windows, though, I'm not sure which versions.
Here's the URL:
http://www.gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page
If you look for the download link (which is only just under where it says 'The GRAMPS Software' which is itself under two info boxes) it'll take you to the relevant site. On Windows XP the link for the *.exe file was the first one above a series of different Linux links. Hopefully this will also work for Vista.

I use www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
You can search the indexes from 1855 to 2006
and all actual records (seen online as documents) from 1855 to
1907 - Births
1932 - Marriages
1958 - Deaths
There is also the census from 1841, 51, 61, 71, 81, 91 & 1901 (1911 is not available from Scotland)
Pre 1855 parish records are also available.
You do need to pay, 1 credit to see an index, 5 credits for a document (£6 for 30 credits)
I use the LDS site www.familysearch.org - free and very helpful
For info on soliders killed in WW1/WW2, try www.cwgc.org - You get info on family, etc - and you get the rnak and serial number which helps with records available at the national archives
The Dublin 1911 census is available for free at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie0 -
I started using Visio to draw my tree, then splurged out and bought Roots Magic for about £16 (download version) and really like it. My best source has been Great Grandma's family bible!0

As others have said - go to your local library. North Yorkshire County Libraries provide some free internet access to members, and subscribe to Ancestry Library Edition. Most larger libraries also hold some local and family history materials, including local parish records and census data on microfilm or on paper.0
