  • Reminds my of the story where someone said she had been brought up to believe people never told lies in the Victorian era.

The 1911 census must have caused some head scratching in some households with the question 'how many years have you been married?'

A quick adding up on fingers 'how old is the eldest child'? put one year on to that.

I remember my aunt doing some interesting calculations in her head when her second brother insisted he was older than she was and gave her his birthdate.

There was only about 30 months between the date of my grandparents' marriage and her birth (she was number 3).

I only started researching my family history 7 weeks ago and have found that my 2nd Great Grandmother was married at 12  and died at 21 years giving birth to her 1st child - upon speaking with older relatives it seems that her daughter was christened over her coffin. Sad, Sad Sad, but I accept that it's all part of my history.

Good Luck in your research and be prepared for some shocks somewhere along the line ....................

Personally, I don't think it's a good idea to identify yourself on a fairly public family tree ....can be too much personal info in a public domain.
Better to describe yourself as "Living Relative" and your children in the same way. It is against the rules of Genes Reunited to add the name of any other living person to your tree without their express permission! They should just be identified as "Living Relative" or else omitted.

It's alright, both Genes Reunited and Ancestry.co.uk hide living relatives so no-one can see them...

Thanks for all your repsonses, i really really appreciate them. :D

I signed up for a 2 week trial with Ancestry.co.uk and it's been brilliant. Within 30 mins I had solved 2 family mysteries....

and no don't worry we have various birth dates that are inaccurate in our family simply because the people who had them have got it wrong or it was reocrded done somewhere incorrectly...

You should see the 1901 census for one lot of my family, i think whoever did it had had a few sly Whiskys! :rotfl:

Will look at all your other links....Thank you once again, it's such a minefield out there or seems to be with my family that any suggestions are very very welcome. :D

Only if you choose the "Hide Living Relatives" option on your account details page! It's doesn't do this automatically.

If you are on Genes Reunited and value your privacy, it's worth doing a quick search of other trees with your own details and any immedate family, to see whether they're showing on other peoples trees. If so you can message them to ask them to be removed. I found my details, my childrens and my fathers on a couple of trees belonging to people with a fairly remote link. One man was extremely stroppy about why he should remove them despite a polite request and after an exchange involving several stroppy emails from him, I referred it to GR who removed them immediately.

OP, glad you've made good progress anyway!

Well Genes Reunited does seem to have changed as the option is automatically ticked now....It's the same with birth dates as well as you used to be able to leave them blank and now you can't which is why I am using Ancestry.co.uk...

I never use my real email address on the internet anyway unless for close family so I know that i won't get bomabrded that way and as for the rest well to be honest I know people's bank accounts have been hacked so there is always a risk when you put information on the internet you just have to make it as safe as possible....

I have already found 2 members to contact on Genes Reunited but guess what you have to pay to contact people so can't do that now... :(

There is a lot of information available to view free online and many libraries have free access to Ancestry library edition.

Can any one advise me on what the main differences are in the Ancestry library edition and the one you can pay to subscribe to?
    Thanks
  • I think, but I'm not 100% sure that you can't see the family trees on the Library edition that you can on the version you subscribe to, don't quote me on this though.

I haven't used the system yet, and am considering the possibility of using the library to research before subscribing, so if I can't see the family trees how is the library edition of use? Excuse my ignorance of the sites!
