Im a plasterer. you can do either, if your having staind wood then it makes sense to do it after, however life doesnt work like that. Ive done millions of conservatories and Its better to do the skirtings after, agap along the top should be minimal if its done right anyway.0

The traditional skilled method is to knock pegs in the wall at 2ft intervals that stand proud by 10-12mm. you then nail the skirting on with a 10-12mm gap behind it. You then plaster the wall down to the skirting. This is really useful with tall skirting because you can add sockets at a later date by tucking cable behind the skirting. Also if skirting is placed 4-6mm above the floor it is good for losing carpet underneath when it is stretched without recutting.
The modern less skilled cheapo way is to plaster down to dpc and use a bonding agent such as gripfill to stick skirting on after. This needs flat walls and straight wood otherwise the wood will touch in some places and leave gaps in others.
If the skirting is fixed direct to the wall before plastering then it would need to be quite thick, or the plaster very thin for it to look right.
If the stains do not come out, you can always make up a 'hockey stick' type profile slightly taller than the existing to cover the bad skirting. The darker you stain it the more likely you are to lose the marks.Cash ISA rate 6.5% fixed for 2 years. Mortgage rate 0.75% = 5.75% profit on £75K = £4500 per year:j

It’s you that’s talking Rubbish!!!!! They attach a wooden baton to the bottom of the wall and then they plaster up to the baton.
They attach the skirting board to the baton as well as the wall, my dad is a builder and when my house was renovated that’s how the dam builders did it.[/QUOTE]
Well I've been a builder for over 25 years and had my own very successful buisness for over 22 years of that time and I've NEVER seen a plasterer do what you describe, i.e. fix grounds to the wall. Your father may have asked the plasterer do it that way but I assure you that is not normal practise. I always put skirting on the walls after the render coat and befor the plaster coat and it is the neatest way of doing the job.0 -
well tom jones . do you put the switch's and sockets on befor plastering as well just to make it harder for the plasterer and make the connections to the live . as you seem to do things the wrong way round . if you do this i am shocked lol . yes i am a plasterer .born free and taxed to death0
