I sat with my children tonight on the settee watching those boys look after their parents and Freya was astounded that they knew how to cook and 'turn on the cooker' and they were so young...it is because they HAD to."I wasn't wrong, I just wasn't right enough.":smileyhea97800072589250 -

I completly agree with you Bunny, but these are just token offerings, a drop in the ocean that may in actual fact, be perpetuating the problem
Well one of the reasons charities stopped carpet bombing those countries with food is that they put all the farmers out of business. They then professed surprise that no one was growing enough food.
Of course now, we flood them with second hand clothing and put seamstresses out of work and so unable to pay for their family without handouts. Eventually the penny will drop that the problem can be generalised - free = job losses - but we may have destroyed everyone's livelihood in the meanwhile..."Follow the money!" - Deepthroat (AKA William Mark Felt Sr - Associate Director of the FBI)

But Mugabe - like every leader - cannot act alone. People who issue orders in isolation soon end up in rooms with rubber wallpaper. He had his supporters, who he bought off with the wealth of other sections of the populace. A significant proportion of the populace supported his course of action of wealth-stripping other people without thinking long-term enough about when it would be their turn.
This is not unique to them, or to Zimbabwe, or to Africa. How many people in this country would and do vote for higher taxes so long as it's not them getting taxed?
We are not immune to Zimbabwe's fate ourselves. As we walk their path, we will walk to their destination. If we walk slowly, it will take a long time to get there - but only another path will take us somewhere different.
And i wonder how many of his supporters (apart from his very close wealthy ones) follow his orders because they beleive his way or because they are afraid of him and of being killed if they are against him?
Because Zimbabwe doesn't have massive oil reserves in the ground then the country is of no use to the UK or USA, otherwise i bet that Mugabe would have gone the way of Saddam.
So because 'we' (UK,USA and other rich countries) can't rape the valuable resourses from Zimbabwe, should we not do anything to help the common person who is starving, who's home is being bulldozed down cos it's a shanty town?Cats don't have owners - they have staff!!DFW Long Hauler Supporter No 1500 -

No - malaria is in every continent except Antartica. Even Europe. Italy has had problems in recent years."Follow the money!" - Deepthroat (AKA William Mark Felt Sr - Associate Director of the FBI)
