    This is a POOR deal

They have basically dropped 10p off selling, for a minimum (it could be alot more if it sells for more than 99p) of 5p (5%) on selling fees.

Your item only has to sell for £2 and they break even again, above £2 and they are more in profit.

They get at least 5p for a almost completely automated system.
  • I can confirm its definitely 10% Final Value fees on these new "free to list" listings. And yes ebay has raised the fees yet again from 7.75%.

Now do the maths on something you sell for just 99p and you accept payment with Paypal.

    Items sells for .........................99p
    10% FVF.................................9.9p
    Paypal fee 3.4% + 20P ...approx 23.4p

Total deductions 32.4p which is almost one third of your fee.

BUT WAIT - Paypal fees include your total payment ie postage and packing. So they are taking 3.4%+20p from that as well. If you dont get your postal charges right you could be paying for postage out of what little you have left from 99p ie 66.6p !!

On a 99p sale is it worth the hassle of posting, packing, the trip to the PO and the inevitable queue?

Its only FREE if your item starts at 99p or less (you can't list for less than 99p, I know, I've tried). If you want to start something at £10.00, it is now cheaper to start listing at 99p and stick-on a £10 reserve.

They will now nick 8.75% off you should your item sell, so now you really do need to research the likely selling price for the type of item you are selling. That way, you know how much you need to charge for P&P to cover your fees.

To successfully keep your costs down, you can use the following methods -
1, Use an alternative listing designer with free image hosting, such as Auctiva or Listing Factory (this one even has photo editing facilities and watermarking of images) - Save 7p
2, Host all your images using either the above, or if you create your own templates, use a photo hosting service such as flickr, photobox or snapfish. Just link to the photo in your listing code.
    3. DON'T use 'Bold' listing option, no-one I know takes a blind bit of notice as to whether or not listings are bold. Save 'Gallery Plus' & 'Featured' for items over £250. Below this, they just are not worth it.
    4. Change your account type from 'business' to 'personal' (or open a second, personal account).

Personally, I didn't mind paying to list, the final selling fee of 5% was reasonable. Now, it's just plain robbery.

Maybe we should all boycott Ebay for 1 week starting on the 1st of April?.

I got so upset as fees are so high they are just ripping off sellers.
DVD sellers have been forced to sell with free p&p and also books are been capped to £2.75 p&p.
The issue though is that Ebay are levying a fee from postage and packing. The overall charges are 8.75% so the seller not only loses out on postage and packing (because being forced to sell with free p&p) but they are paying fees on them.
So the overall charges Ebay and paypal will result in a loss for the seller effectively subsidising these greedy companies.
    So Beware.
    Cheaper online auctions are ebid.net.
I have listed the website on a new thread.

Surely the answer is to pay the 10p (or whatever) and list with a higher start price

I'd rather pay 10% of something when a sale is made, than pay 0% of nothing from an unsuccesful listing - which is my own experience from a few alternatives sites.

The simple answer that many people seem to be missing is to make sure that your starting prices are high enough to cover the increased costs, if indeed the costs have increased. If the item sells for less than £9 (ish - have the figures somewhere!), then it works out cheaper on the new fee structure.

10% !! although i do use both, i hate both ebay and paypal unreservedly. the problem is that there is no competition, so they can continue to charge rip off fees.

I'm sure I'll come across as an Ebay apologist again, but compared with competition (despite rumours to the contrary there are many!) both online and off line they are pretty good value for the service they provide. Offline auction houses charge 25% and upwards on the knockdown price and can't offer as many customers, online sites that are cheaper have no comparable sales or users.

If what Ebay charge is too steep for your selling then they are probably telling you you shouldn't be bothering!

Ebay don't just keep what they charge, they do spend on advertising (on and offline), affiliate link fees, search engines, etc to keep up their profile, registered users and sales figures.
