Accommodation in Amsterdam

Does anyone recommend any (cheapish) hotels in Amsterdam.

Location wise near to main places but away from dodgy areas.

Cheers for any help!

is the best place in the whole of holland!
  • Hi Jenny

I cant seem to stop posting on this forum this eve - has become a bit addictive!!

i went to amsterdam last oct and we stayed in the following apartment:

    http://www.sleephappy.nl/index.php

It is £60 (90 Euros) per night total price for the one bed apt, which is about a 10 min walk from the Anne Frank House, and about 3 tram stops from central station so it is basically walkable everywhere. It is on a convenient tram route (just outside the flat is a tram that goes either to the centre or across the city). A strippenkart is a cheap way to see the city.

Re the apartment, it was clean, basic, a kitchen with tea and coffee etc, clean towels but dont expect luxury - it was fine for what we wanted as we were hardly there. there is satellite tv, and a lovely view over canal. the 2 blokes that own the apt are really nice and can help with anything while you are there. There was a lovely local restaurant literally one block away which i would recommend. There is also a supermarket nearby to buy the basics.

Given that AMS is so expensive, this was excellent value for money, spacious, quiet and suited us. the only thing i didnt like was that it had a slight smell of smoke, and if you are a non smoker like me it can be quite off putting. There was a shower room but no bath, but that was ok. The heating can be put on and off when you like. i would stay there again, and it will sleep 4 people (2 in double bedroom, 1 on sofa and 1 on pullout sofabed). Going by the rates on expedia it seemed very good value. The other place that i really liked teh look of but they didnt have availability at the time is http://www.noahsark.nl/index.php?page=home.php for 80 Euros per night for an attic suite. However they arent central, you would need to get a train for 10 mins into the centre.

AMS is great, you will love it. We did a boat tour one evening with a guide and it was such a laugh. i bought the lonely planet pocket guide to AMS as it listed what to see. A lot of the good restaurants need prebooking so best to plan a few things ahead.

Enjoy!! Let me know how you get on.

    Hiya,

I stayed in the The Quentin Arrivè hotel on Haarlemmerstraat 65 last summer, which was nice and central. It cost £22 each a night for a room for three (which was cheap for Amsterdam), but it wasn't very...nice. Lol!

The rooms were small, none of the lights worked when we got there, and there were holes in the wall where people had ripped out the plug sockets...however it was in a safe part of town, but within walking distance of the Centraal and Dam Squares, and the Red Light District. There were lots of coffee shops nearby too.

We orginally went there because we didnt want to share a dorm (as they can be hellish in Amsterdam), and we got an ensuite for that price too, but they didnt clean our rooms once, and it was just a bit of a heap. So the lesson is, you get what you pay for!

Having said that, the experience was still good, and I'm glad we didnt have to share with any weird stoner strangers!

PS Wherever you decide to stay, you HAVE to visit Boom Chicago! - it's a really good show, like Who's Line Is It Anyway, it's in one of the central squares in Amsterdam, and you can go and have a really nice dinner there and them watch the most hysterical show ever! It's mainly improvised, and all of the actors are American - they tour all over but are based in Amsterdam, and have headlined at places like the Edinburgh Festival. I highly recommend it!

    Hi
Last year we stayed at the Hotel novo, its very central right by Dams Square and they also have very large rooms so you can sleep up to 4 to a room and as the Dutch charge by the room it works out cheaper! There is also a fridge in the room and a supermarket a few days down. Check it out on tripadvisor.com.
But if ever I stray from the path I follow
Take me down to the English Channel
Throw me in where the water is shallow And then drag me on back to shore!
'Cos love is free and life is cheap As long as I've got me a place to sleep
Clothes on my back and some food to eat I can't ask for anything more

    Hi

Only planning to go for 3 nights, the flights are slightly more than we had hoped.

Accommodation wise, I'd usually stop in a hostel, but to be honest I'm quite scared of it being full of drug takers (no offence to anyone).

Anyone any advice on hostels that would be ok?

    Hotels as cheap as possible.

    Cheers
  • We stayed in the Golden Tulip - big flash hotel chain, which was lovely and luxurious but not what you're looking for. We paid £99 per room at Easter last year for 5 star which we figured was a good deal. This site has good deals http://www.hotels.nl/, and this has tourist info. http://www.amsterdam.info/

I recommend that you visit Utrecht. You can get the train from Amsterdam. Utrecht has everything that is lovely about Amsterdam, without the seedy side. There are lots of really nice shops, coffee houses without the drugs! and canal side cafes.

We stopped for 4 days in Amsterdam. Spent 2 of those in Amsterdam it'sself. 1 day in Utrecht and 1 day in Delft. If we went again - we'd definately stay in Utrecht instead of Amsterdam.

The hotel I mentioned above was the cheapest I could find on the internet by far, and you do get a private room, and we had no hassle from other people staying there. I would pretty much avoid hostels like the plague if you dont want to share a room with people who are there for the drugs!

I'm not really into the drugs side of Amsterdam and I had no problem staying there for 5 days, but things might have been different if I'd have been staying in a hostel...

  • We used Priceline.co.uk and "bid" for the room. We ended up in the 4 star Marriott for about £60 per night.

If you've never used Priceline, the secret is to tick as few boxes as possible at first - you can't simply bid £30 for a room, find they won't take it, bid £35, find they won't take it etc. You have to change an element of your booking (or wait three days!).

So if you want to stay centrally, but would be okay in the business district (for larger cities, not Amsterdam!), just start off with only the central area selected. Ditto 5 star / 4 star etc. Start off with your ideal, and add other things you'd accept, whilst edging up your price. We usually check out lastminute etc. and decide what we feel is a bargain (taking into account you don't find out the name of the hotel until after you've paid), and work up to that price. It doesn't always work I would add! The bigger the city, the better the chance.

This will all make more sense once you're on priceline working through the options.
