  • BT Broadband Option 4 plus BT line rental will give you 2MB speed, 40GB usage limit for less than £45.
  • ha! thought i may be able to shave some money off my Bills

Errmmmm....you are currently paying £45 and BT Broadband Option 4 will cost you £41, so you will save, admittedly only by a couple of quid, but still a saving.
  • oh i getcha £4 a month saving is good.

ne1 know other providers who can rival this?

    Hi leeegglestone,

I have used PlusNet, and would recommend them. For £21.99pm you get their "Premier" product which allows up to 30GB peak usage (I think thats 4pm-12am), and a total combined peak/off-peak limit of 100GB.

That's for a 2MB ADSL connection - from April, that should buy you an 8Mbps connection (once your exchange is enabled for MaxDSL by BTwholesale). For details of the April changes, see here:- PlusNet Broadband Product Update - April 2006

With BT line rental, that should cost you £32.99 per month.

Hope that offers better value for you :)

P.S. Depending where you are, you may have the option of going for an ISP which provides ADSL using LLU (Local Loop Unbundling) - this is where they have installed their own equipment at the BT exchange. Often this allows faster speeds, at a lower cost. Use the ISP's checkers for details:- ADSL Checkers
  • hmm I was told that line rental is £20 a month, is this not the case on BT?

also can u check online on the plusnet

to see if an area is acceptable for the broadband and at what speed, i doubt where i want it that you can get more than 1mb.id b gutted if it was less

Well standard BT line rental is £11.00 per month. If you want calls bundled in, then you need the Option 2 or 3 line rental which is more expensive:-
    BT Line Rental Options

There are cheaper ways to call than using BT's Option 2 or 3 packages - but as you said you're not gonna be a high phone user, I doubt they're of interest anyway.

Go to the online checker list I linked to above, and use the BTw Availability Checker to see what speed your line is likely to support.
  • Hi.

First of all, I'm not a sales person and I don't work for or have any affiliated connections with the following companies mentioned in my post! :)

    Line rental

I don’t know how much it costs for cable line rental but with BT it costs £11/month (by paying by Direct debit), you get free features like caller display, 1471 and BT Answer 1571. Some line rental providers block certain numbers (like numbers beginning with 1xxx), which you would normally use to access to gain cheaper calls, i.e. during the day. I think TalkTalk is one of them, although you do save 50p/month with them.

If going for BT, I would recommend signing up for TalkTalk 2 tariff (for voice calls) as currently they are offering 12 months free evening and weekend calls to UK landline numbers as well as other TalkTalk customers! After 12 months, make sure you switch to TalkTalk 1 tariff (which just gives you free weekend calls to UK landlines as well as other TalkTalk customers) else you will be charged £3.99/month.

    Cash back

To enjoy an additional saving at the beginning I would recommend going through cash back sites when taking up the offers described above.

I don’t think you can get cash back for taking out a line rental with BT. However I think you can with ntl. With rpoints you can get “1000 points when you complete an online purchase of one of NTL's Broadband, dial-up, telephone or digital TV services” With quidco, you get “£40 for validated ntl: Home or ntl

On the Quidco site it doesn't specify that you can get a cash back for signing up for TalkTalk voice calls, only £20 for a landline sale and £20 for a broadband lead whereas on rpoints it states you get cash back (1000 points which equals about £10) for taking up voice calls/broadband. You could PM quidco to ask, it’s someone from Quidco who posts on this site to give replies to people's questions etc. The thread to go to post on is here

    Broadband

If after searching for the maximum download speed you can get and its only 1or 2mb then I would recommend TalkTalk broadband as you can get 1mb unlimited broadband for only £14.99 or 2mb unlimited broadband for only £17.99/month with a free modem too. It's cheaper to get broadband with the TalkTalk calls (not line rental) instead of just ordering Broadband from them, otherwise for broadband only it costs £26.99 and £29.99

    Cash back

I would definitely sign up for TalkTalk broadband with Quidco as it pays double that of rpoints.

If you plan to go with TalkTalk products, I would sign up for the calls and Broadband separately so to increase the amount of cash back you should get back for taking up their offers online.

Last point is to make sure that you check your monthly bills to see if they are accurate. On my first bill from them they overcharged me and I phoned up customer services who gave me a refund.

I wouldn't touch TalkTalk for ADSL (or their landline services either to be honest). For someone to recommend an ISP, and have a little note saying check your bills as they "overcharge" I would say you're better off going elsewhere for a service.

Just take a look at the bad experiences of people over at the ADSLguide TalkTalk forum.

They claim to be "unlimited", but there are many, including those I know, that complain of crippling throtling especially P2P downloads. Being a 12 month minimum term contract, once you're with them you're stuck - and thats not good if you experience bad levels of service.
