British Gas quote extortionate?

Ah, that was the poster who tried to upsell a similar price request from a poster who wanted to know the price of replacement boiler; he tried to include radiators and a new hot water cylinder too as well as a Magetite (magnetic filter) that the OP here seems to have been talked into. If a system has worked perfectly for 20 or 30 years, why does it need one now? They alone probably cost £100-£200 (which I included in the above £1000 material cost as per the OP's quote)

Good morning: Apparently you didn't agree with my suggestion that the material costs associated with a boiler installation following 'Best Practice' would be greater than the cost of the boiler (as detailed in the link generously provided by you;)). As for finding out the price of a boiler and other materials, anyone can google.
As always, a RGI after conducting a site visit would be best placed to advise the OP. Price is determined by a number of factors which I won't list again as I have detailed this in many other posts over the last few years.

I believe one thing it does demonstrate is the fact that they've paid mega bucks to have the Corgi name emblazoned on their literature. Over a grand a year?Call me Carmine....

So not really applicable to those who just want a replacement boiler
Good morning: Following your logic a guide produced by the Energy Saving Trust and ' designed to help installers, specifiers and purchasers of domestic central heating systems using gas to select the most appropriate system for their needs' (EST's words not mine) isn't applicable to replacement gas boilers. A gas boiler is the major component in a gas CH system according to the Domestic Heating Compliance Guide and relevant Building Regulations.
If consumers are concerned about being spun a line in regard to requirements and want a reliable source of information, the EST guide is an invaluable resource...but of course that is the opinion of yet another anonymous poster on an internet forum:D

...
A gearbox is a major component of a motor car, but you don't need to buy a new engine when buying a new gearbox.
A motor is a major component of a washing machine, but you don't need to buy a new drum when buying a new motor.
A central heating system is a major component of a house, but you don't need to buy a new roof when buying a new central heating system.
Or maybe according to your logic you do?"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
That's correct
A gearbox is a major component of a motor car, but you don't need to buy a new engine when buying a new gearbox.
A motor is a major component of a washing machine, but you don't need to buy a new drum when buying a new motor.
A central heating system is a major component of a house, but you don't need to buy a new roof when buying a new central heating system.
Or maybe according to your logic you do?
Hmm...now Building Regulations and associated documents apply to the repair of cars and washing machines?..the plot thickens.:D
Enough from me on this tangent. Perhaps the OP could post back and let us know how she/he got on?

No building regs don't apply to cars and washing machines.
Also, they don't apply retrospectively to already built properties."Now to trolling as a concept. .... part of a Which report from February
An investigation by Which? has found that on three separate occasions British Gas quoted up to twice as much as the lowest-priced independent heating engineer for the same boiler replacement job.
British Gas said: ‘It is difficult to provide a succinct comment, given that in all these circumstances British Gas were just one of a number of quotes the consumers explored and we didn’t actually install any of the boilers.’0
