Has anyone got any infomation on the other type of Traffic Surveys where you just sit in your car and count traffic? You normally see retired couples parked up on grass verges etc
That's what I was doing in my first job. We were all sent out with a map to a junction and I had to sit in my car and count traffic going past - we each had one arm of a junction to do, and had to count where it was turning (e.g. left, straight on, or right), and mark whether it was a bike, car, bus, van or lorry. They provided everything you needed, e.g. paper, pencils, clipboards, clickers and hi-viz jackets.

In general it was pretty good - a bit boring ticking bits of paper for hours on end but it was okay as I could listen to the radio too. They tell you to wear a hi-viz jacket all the time because then if someone hits your car you're covered on their insurance, which meant you had a few idiots driving past giving the middle finger but nothing major.

Everyone seemed pretty friendly and they said there's quite a lot of variety in the work - even one guy who had to sit and watch a footpath for 12 hours, and only counted 3 people in all that time! Would definitely recommend it to anyone.

I guess it's to do with your location. I signed up with them in March and got a job straight away. Heard nothing since until earlier this week for a job this week in the West Mids - can't take it though as in the middle of exams, would have got over £300 for the shifts that were available too

Lucky you eh. I do traffic surveys as part of my actual full time job, boring as hell IMHO, I sit and listen to the radio listening to queues wishing to be somewhere else on that godforsaken morning. There is a happy medium- really busy it goes quick, really quiet and you get the chance to read the paper only reacting when you hear a car coming. The worst is the survey standing outside IMHO- numerous times I've been dropped off in rough estates or in countryside better known for survival skills training! Surprised that manual counters are still used so much with the advent of video and ANPR stuff.

As a motorist I would resent being stopped and some one asking me where I was going.Thats my business, not some stranger on side of road. There is enough observation of us without anyone putting it down in writing.
So get stuffed would be my reply to anyone stopping me.

I appreciate the sentiment, but without knowing where people are going and when- how can you ensure new road schemes and public transport will meet their requirements or not cause traffic congestion? The surveys are only been done to help the motorist, and aren't done without good reason or on the fly- hence the need for a police officer. You don't have to answer, but it helps if you do- and none of the data kept should make the person identifiable.

Traffic counting is part of my job at work, but not the main part of it as I'm a road engineer and a lot of stuff is done in house on overtime.

Never heard of CTS till I read this- lots of other survey companies about probably wanting temps too-look up yellow pages and give them a ring.

I've just seen this company whilst looking through the jobs on the Jobcentre Plus website.

You register your details and they'll contact you as and when they need people in your area.

The shifts are 12 hours and the rate of pay is £78 per shift. They had three dates in March for my area, but as I have a part-time job, I'm unable to do a 12 hour shift, but thought I'd pass on the details.

    Wow!

    :TThanks seroxat_chick!:T

I just registered with them yesterday evening, and received a 'phone call this afternoon asking if I would be available to work tomorrow!

This will be the first paid work that I've done in months - really fantastic.:j

    Can't thank you enough :kisses3:

    CAL.

P.S. Sorry, I don't usually go quite so overboard on the smilies :o

I did a shift recently, and although it was boring, it wasn't too bad. Luckily I was able to sit in the car most of the time and read and snack on stuff but I don't think I would like it if I had to be stood outside all day. Hope you enjoy your shift.

hi i would only be able to take jobs where I have the car with me and I am able to sit down as I cannot stand for long periods of time (back surgery is the reason). So can anyone suggest some companies I could register with which would offer me this sort of work please? I am in South East if thats any help and if possible would prefer shorter shifts.
