After 'discovering' http://www.mysupermarket.co.uk/ it became obvious for my shopping needs that Sainsbury was the cheapest...which was rather surprising.

I have found the exact same thing and was very surprised because I also had assumed that Sainsburys were the most expensive.

I've been wondering about Tesco's 'real baskets' advertising campaign, because right now, based on my own 'real basket', Tescos are circa £10 more expensive in mysupermarket.com! I'm assuming that maybe Tesco works out cheaper for junk/processed/branded foods, but I don't know and don't care about that.

Looking at what's in my basket ... I have pitta bread, a selection of fruit n veg, dairy including buttermilk, yoghurt, uht milk, eggs... gammon, prawns, a range of tinned goods (kidney beans, tuna, chopped toms, fruit etc), porridge, plain flour, bread flour, rich tea, toothpaste .... all chosen from basics range where available.

All of which costs £21.86 at Sainsburys, £23.66 at Asda, and £31.38 at Tescos!!

I don't think even Lidl could beat the £21.86, they used to be the cheapest I think, but their prices have rocketed in the last couple of years, so I dont bother going there anymore.

I find ASDA to be the cheapest although I generally prefer Tesco.

ocado for waitrose is doing tesco price match ( although I dont think tescos are partic cheap)

im going to give this a whirl as Ive been shopping a lot at M&S which is definately a lot cheaper than it used to be and def cheaper than waitrose, lets see!
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

I buy organic animal products (which are cheapest in Sainsbury) and they have a huge range of 'Basics' including vegetables like aubergines, sweet potato and fruit like strawberries and blueberries.

It really does depend on your individual tastes.

I don't like Tesco much, there's something about the lighting and the height of the shelves that has an alarming effect on my temper.

    Regards.

I concur 100%. I was also very shocked as had always been of the impression that Sainsbug was expensive. How times have changed. I have made a 'dry run' online order (still ongoing) and currently have 80 items in it (predominantly Basics range). Approx £60 at Sainsbug, £74 at Tesco and Asda. Amazing, really...

It all depends what you buy as 1 supermarket for me would be cheaper than another 1 but it could be the other way round for you

    Re Tesco's "real baskets".
If you look at the bottom of the screen when the ad is on you will see that they do include their offers in the price check. (but not multibuys eg 2 for £3).
The majority of shoppers would pick up at least one bogof on their way around doing a weekly shop and this would automatically make many baskets cheaper as in Sainsbury's the basket would have 2 full priced items. (sneaky eh?)
The numbers also don't factor in how much cheaper the baskets might be in Tesco. A 20p difference is not worth driving out of your way for.
I suppose as with everything, Caveat Emptor!

Absolutely, but I think the reason Sainsburys seems to have shot to the top for many people is the broadness of their value range - they just seem to stock their Basics range in far more depts than other supermarkets. So you can get the Basics range at Sainsburys on stuff like Chicken (& vegetable) stock cubes, for instance, when the other's don't stock a value range on that item so you would ineviatbly be paying more for a 'similar' item. The vegetable stock cubes is a good example. Sainsburys basics are 19p per packet of 10. Asda's cheapest (only?) product is the Oxo packet of vegetable cubes at 78p. A huge difference which when replicated throughout your basket makes a huge difference to the important amount at the bottom of your receipt.

I didn't know about mysupermarket.com so I actually did a shop in morrisons then took the receipt and put the same items into the asda and the tesco online site, I was quite shocked at the result as for my bi-weekly shop morrisons were £40 Tesco £48!!!!!!! and the winner Asda £38!

I suspect it will vary from person to person I have just ordered my first online shop from Asda to arrive on Monday, it will be very interesting as it only came to £36 and that was with a lot of toiletries so I have either forgotten lots or I haven't impulse bought!
2009 wins: Cadburys Chocolate Pack x 6, Sally Hansen Hand cream, Ipod nano! mothers day meal at Toby Carvery! :j :j :j :j
