emlou.. you're dealing with two different things - the right to return and the right to request flexible working.
Right to return.. If you are returning within six months of starting your maternity leave (the period known as "Ordinary Maternity Leave"), you are entitled to return to the exact same job - same role, same hours, same money (same desk, same mug etc etc!) - forget about wanting to change your hours for a minute. If you are returning between six and twelve months of starting your maternity leave (the period known as "Additional Maternity Leave"), you are entitled to return to an equivalent job to the one you left - this MAY be the same one as you left, or if they have given that to someone else, you have the right to be given a role which is the same money, benefits (holidays, pension etc), responsibility and status as the one you left (ie you're no worse off, except maybe having grouchier colleagues to deal with).
Right to request flexible working.. You are entitled to REQUEST (but not have granted - they can reject your proposals if they have good reason) flexible working. I notice the term "flexitime" has been used but bear in mind this is just one of the various new ways of arranging your hours (just want to make sure you're using the right terminology in your request letter).
You need to think about how you want to work it, how many hours and how/when you want to work them, bearing in mind the way your employer operates. For example, I work five days a week, Mon-Fri, 0830-1635 - if I want to go back for only four days a week, I have to make suggestions for how I would do that.. would I be able to transfer 20% of my work to someone else; or would I extend my working day to do all my hours in four days, etc etc. It is pointless me suggesting a job share on those hours because it's very unlikely we would find someone who only wanted to work one weekday a week, so they would reject it on those grounds.
Like the link Tine gave says, they have 14 weeks to consider your request - either get the request in more than 14 weeks before you want to go back, or be prepared to have to return on your old basis (if you wanted to go back within the next 14 weeks) until the 14 weeks are up before they make their decision and adjust your hours accordingly.
If they don't agree, they need to be very cautious about why they are rejecting you and have to consider absolutely all options, otherwise they leave themselves open to a unfair/constructive dismissal claim on the grounds of sex discrimination. At the same time, try to make it easy for them by requesting something which will actually work, rather than something completely random and unworkable
Also remember that this right to request is being extended to the parents/guardians of all children under 16 years old from 6th April 2009 (currently only open to those with children under 6), so you may find you have competition from other employees (with children over 6) who want to go parttime and are just waiting for the next few weeks before exercising their right to request too.
Hope this helpsShout if you have any questions!

Sami - I like your smile! It's not sausagey at all.
mine is sometimes nice, sometimes awful - I have to be careful not to laugh as it wrinkles my nose up and makes me look dreadful. Loads of my wedding pics have me like that and they are never going to make it into the album. DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j
