£600 quote to tile floor and wall 9 metres SQM excluding materials

All,

Looks like me and an acquantance is going to fall out. I am getting a bathroom tiled, the tiles I woud your opinion.

I have 9 SQM of tiles measuring 33cm x 33cm each. I was under the impression it was a few days work and have come back home after day two approximately 3 SQM has been done. I asked the person in question how much to complete the job and got informed that it would be £600 excluding materials.

I would say that about 3-4SQM has been tiled in the two days and this is far too slow for my liking. I'm rather annoyed as a result, am I being overcharged or is this a fair price?

Is it 9 square metres, or 9 metres square?

Wow - next time ring me!

£66 per metre, I charge £30p/m excluding materials and thats for natural stone. Total should be no more than £300 + materials.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

I think you might have to resign yourself in losing an aquantance, as he is taking the micky.

I agree with DCS, the tilers I have worked with charge approx £25-£30 per sqm, and they include the materials, except the tiles of course.

Did you agree on a price before he started? If he is slow, or not spending enough time at the job, then its his problem not yours, you shouldnt be expected to pay for more days just because he hasnt spent the whole day tiling.

Any decent tiler would do this in more than 2 days.

When I price for a job, I work out how long it will take me, so I charge accordingly, if sometimes,( and it does happen) it takes me longer, then its not the clients problem, its mine, as I should have given myself extra time.
I would never charge them any extra just because the job has taken a day or so later.
It does work the other way, most times I finish in under the time, so its swings and roundabouts.

:rotfl:Lordy - what it must be like huh? I don't charge half enough then.

I agree - £ 25 - 30 per metre plus primer, addy, sealant and grout. About £ 300 labour tops for tiling 3m x 3m = 9 square metres. Bottom of price bracket = ceramic, top end = natural stone. If its 9m x 9m not only is it an enormous bathroom at 81 sqm but for £ 600 thats a very good deal.

    Cheers

I agree with DCS. Is it ceramic tiles? Based on London prices, 9 square metres at £25 p/sm. £30 inc adhesive!

    Hes trying it.

There are few pertinent questions need asking before we all assume this is taking the pee...

Was any preparation required? DId the floorboards need attention, did the floor need overboarding or repairing.

Were the walls in good condition, was part of his remit stripping the old tiles off, preparing the walls and making good before he starts?

In the years I spent as a tiling contractor we gave up pricing domestic jobs on a sq/m basis and transfered to day rate due to the above requirements.

In a day a tiler could fit 2 sq/m of fininshed work (mosaics) or 40 sq/m of finsihed word (33 x 33) car showroom flooring.
  • This is spooky, i have received a quote today for tiling the wall and floor of my bathroom - 9sqm for... £600 as well.

I was also wondering whether this was fair or not. In his quote he did give a day by day break down as to what needed to be done. I also confirmed to him that it would be ceramic tiles: This is the key info on my quote:

    To include:-
-Removing of old wall and floor tiles
-Installing BAL WP1 Waterproofing System in the shower area
-Tiling the walls and floors with tiles purchased by customer
-Grouting of the walls with BAL white grout and floors with BAL grey grout

    TIME FRAME
The above job would take approximately 4 days to complete.
-Day 1 we would remove the old tiles from the walls and floor and waterproof the shower area. (The waterproofing takes 24 hours to set normally) Depending on the time it takes to remove the old tiles we could start retiling on day 1
-Day 2 we will continue retiling the bathroom wall area.
-Day 3 we would finish any remaining wall tiling and then grout all the wall areas and then tile the floor area.
-Day 4 Grouting the floor area.

I was impressed with the guys detail - maybe you should ask for somethign like this? However, i thought 4 days was a bit much?

A good tiler should do that in 3 days

    WP1 tanking kit is £50

Grout and adhesive would be around £50

What is the state of the walls, what substrate is the floor?

  • All,

Thanks for the responses to date.

There were some small tiles around the bath, I would say about 2 metres squared. That was removed. The floor is bare and requires boarding. He is saying that would take two days work.

The issue is around cost either per day or per metre. He asked me to search for stuff online and the highest I found is £40 per metre. I bought grout and other materials, coming to £50.

I have told him to stop for now. So if anyone know someone who can finish the remainder off for £25 PSM with materials I would be very happy!
