Car problem advice needed.

I own a honda civic
I took the car for an MOT at Kwik Fit.yesterday
I dropped the car off at lunch time and it seemed fine.
The guy phoned me at about 1:30 and told me the car had failed the MOT on the rear pads and discs.
I told him that if the work needed doing then he should get it done and that I would pick the car up after work.
The bill came to £203.
When I drove back home I could hear a noise from the rear of the car when I got to 30 or above ...sounds like a playing card rubbing on a bike tyre .
I phoned up this morning and they said bring it in.
I did and one guy took a drive with me,Had the tyres off and checked .Said it all looked OK and he then took it for another drive with another mechanic.
They came back and said it sounded like the bearing had gone on the driver side rear.
I said I wasn't happy as this problem was not there before.
Also that it surely wouldn't pass it's MOT if it was .
They said the MOT would not pick it up ...

Any body got any suggestions on where I stand.
Should the MOT have found a broken bearing ?
Could it have been broken when the discs were changed.

I feel a bit hard done to here ,but if it is just one of those things I will just have to bite the bullet and get it done ....Probably not at Kwik-Fit

One more thing ...About how much would a bearing replacement cost ?

its no great shock kwikfit failed it on a part they sell & fit
if there was play in the rear bearing then this should have been picked up at the MOT.
perhaps worth contacting VOSA and raising a query with them and the quality of MOT you have recieved

    how old is your car?

a bearing collapsing while work being carried out on the brakes isnt unheard of, infact it happened to me when i was doing my brakes a few years ago.
sometimes when your fixing one thing another problem can arise,in fact it usually does where cars are concerned.
i wouldnt have used kwik fit though.
a bearing wont, well it shouldnt cost much to replace, you should be looking under £100 for parts and labour, depending on where you take it.
    ...work permit granted!

The car is an 03 plate.
I had it in for a service in August where they replaced the front discs and pads ...that was with nationwide.I have done about 2000 miles since then ..I Drive a company van half the time.
I accept that it could have broke during the removal or fitting of the discs ...Kwik fit are saying to me the bearing had gone before the MOT and that the MOT would not pick it up.
I say I think it broke while you fitted my breaks ...they say No it was broke before we had it ...I have an MOT in between that may be able to say one way or the other.
But I don't know whether an MOT is supposed to pick up a broken bearing ?
I don't think it will get me a free bearing ...But i would hate to argue the toss over something and find I am wrong .

it can depend on your brake set up, most discs i have seen dont need you to go near the bearing, but i know of some that need the driveshaft removed just to do discs,so its hard to say.
an MOT would pick up a bearing with play in it,but this would only be a case of jacking up said wheel and trying to move wheel from top and bottom.
did you hear any slight rumbling noises before MOT?

    I don't think so .
I am one of those hypochondriac type drivers ....Always listening for a different sound That means the end of my car.
I do have the radio on and so it could have been rumbling ..but nothing compared to the sound now and nothing that started at 30'ish.And nothing that registered.

I'm still stuck with the problem that when they told me it would not be picked up in an MOT is that correct ?

No .The alloys are Dirty but not scuffed.

I asked about the scuff as the bearing often gets knackered when the car is kerbed, thought they might have been out for a test drive. A bit like this link...
