My premium with Elephant increased by over £100!! I called to complain, stating that even their parent company Admiral were quoting me far less, but they wouldn't reduce it.

I have just renewed with Elephant but I have a conviction pending (42 in a 30 allegedly). I checked whether I would have to pay an increased premium when (& if) the points were added to my license and they said that it wouldnt affect my insurance until my next renewal.

Can anyone confirm whether this info is true?

I was driving my partners car and got done 35 in a 30. My premium would go up £50 and hers only £20 so she's gonna take the rap !!

They come off you licence after 3 years... so you can request a new one and they won't be listed. You have to inform insurance companies up to 5 years.. 1 one thing.. they DVLA wipe them after 3 years.. there's not way the insurance company can check!!! So it is advised that you tell them up to 5 years.. but they can't actually trace them! ;)

They stay on your licence for 4 years, SEE HERE, the 3 year rule is for totting up re disqualification.

You're right as well! I never knew that, I always thought it was 3 years.

I suppose it doesn't really make a difference though. Insurers never ask "Do you have points on your licence", they always ask "Have you had any convictions within the past 3 years", or 5 years in some cases.

Of course a speeding fine will make a difference to your insurance premium.

However......there are so many factors that affect a car insurance renewal, that it is almost impossible to determine the effect of a specific item such as a speeding fine/points on licence.

Of course, it is easy to get a quote from a single company with, and without, the licence points being mentioned. But that will just tell you the loading that the points make to the premium for THAT company. Another company might still quote a lower overall premium WITH the points, that that company would quote WITHOUT the points.

Personally, I don't worry about any issue that might affect a premium, such as points, accident claim, additional driver etc. I simply contact a wide range of insurers, quote my exact conditions and ask for the quote. Then pay for the cheapest (within reason).

(Of course, you should never lie about your circumstances - it ILL reduce your insurance premium, which is good in the short term, but 'if' you have to make a claim, especially a big one, then the company is likely to check carefully all the conditions you quoted. If you have lied, they might be within their right to turn down your claim - that's going to be a lot more costly in the long run, and not worth the risk.)

    Cheers,
    Don
