Speeding makes insurance rise

Recently I got caught at 41mph in 30 zone. It was dual carriageway with 40 then 30 and my friend had noticed i was doing just over the 40 in the 40 zone and asked"isnt this 30 here" and i said no but will show you when it is.I did that but still managed to go through the Camera at 41.Point is I didnt realise that doing so would increase my Insurance by £37 per year.Anyone else noticed that on their insurance premium?

Yip, mine went up on my insurance but didn't affect my partners. I am so annoyed and everyone said 3 points wouldnt make a difference.
    Everyone was wrong. :(

My premium with Elephant increased by over £100!! I called to complain, stating that even their parent company Admiral were quoting me far less, but they wouldn't reduce it.

In the end I cancelled their policy and moved to Esure who gave me an even lower quote (less than the Elephant quote before the points).

I am pretty sure when my parents told our insurance company about my points and my mums that they said well so many people have them now its not worth worrying about!!

  • it does pay to shop around, there have been reports or statements issued from various companies that they wont consider adding for less than 6pts of SP30 offence. others while add a premium - they may be lower than what you already are paying.

the thing is, it used to be that only really bad driving attracted points... now millions of drivers are receiving points - and the insurance companies are starting to have to compete for their business, plus the accident statistics for those with points are dropping because of the amount with points.

also ensure that if you have points for speeding it is a SP30 offence, and not a SP40, SP50 SP60 etc. as north wales police admitted they where giving SP70s for speeding offences on motorways, sp60 on d restricted roads sp40s on 40 limits and sp30s on 30 limits which is wrong, as sp30 is the only code for exceeding the speed limit. having wrongly received a sp60 could mean you are denied insurance - something you have to declare for ever more.

My insurance went up £80 for a SP30 with Esure - You have to declare it for 5 years to, so thats -
    £60 Fine
    £80x5 Years insurance increase
£20/£30 to remove points from licence

    Almost £500 for doing 39 in a 30 !!

    BE WARNED!!!

That 5 year thing really annoys me. Not all insurers do it, but the fact is that after 3 years it's removed from your licence and should cease to be a problem.

It's the same with accidents/claims, some of them are 3 years and some are 5, which means that with some insurers I have to declare an accident from Jan 2002 and some I don't!

Alot of insurance companies will allow 3 points.. when I was with Liverpool Victoria they didn't give a monkey how many you had aslong as you weren't banned! So defo pays to shop around!

They come off you licence after 3 years... so you can request a new one and they won't be listed. You have to inform insurance companies up to 5 years.. 1 one thing.. they DVLA wipe them after 3 years.. there's not way the insurance company can check!!! So it is advised that you tell them up to 5 years.. but they can't actually trace them! ;)

  • If it's a 3 year conviction then you don't have to declare it beyond that, Rehabilitation of Offenders Act etc.
  • Yes, Tesco added £30 onto our bill thanks to my DH's speeding conviction...he is now on strict instructions not to add any more to our insurance bill!
