Not everyone has the choice of all the supermarkets within a 50 mile radius!! Nearest city to me is Inverness - a 3 hour ferry crossing and 1 hour + road journey away! Perhaps longer for fayjmck?

In Scotland - there are only 2 Waitrose branches, both in Edinburgh, though talk of Glasgow getting one

Asda - central belt + Perth, Aberdeen, Dundee, & Elgin (not sure what's in the Borders & Dumfries & Galloway)

Sainsbury - Central Belt & Aberdeen - not one in Inverness or Perth :( Though there is talk of Nairn getting one.

Morrisons - there is one in Inverness and most of the other major towns & cities

Tesco - Ubiquitous! Lewis, Orkney and Shetland all got a branch last year! Mr T's in every postcode area in Scotland.....

We do get the scenery, no crime, midges, no junk food, inflated petrol costs but lots beauty and space! I think we get restricted choice but (am sure u agree Nessie) I do think as much as it involves a bit of lateral thinking, we do get overall a lovely quality of life!

Waves to Nessie and all - omg petrol is 12.7p a ltr cheaper here in central Scotland

Um 2 hr ferry and 3 hour drive for me to Inverness
Nearest asda about 4 hour drive

Hi, as your planning on buying in bulk try Makro (only available if you are a business though) or Aldi.

    Regards, Naomi

Hi, how did you get on ?
I ended up doing a trip south with DS.....was fun but tired now!
Got 4 big bottles of star drops (and some BOGOF stardrops spray!) in Tesco, 99p each.
Did some other shopping in Morry's and Asda and got some different things.
Poundland/Boots for cheap shower gels, shampoos, stuff for DS.
Also Marks and Sparks for some treats.
Also got DS's birthday pressies for June.
Diesel was 10p cheaper per litre :) so came back with 1/2 tank left :)
Car did 600 mile round trip plus about 75 miles driving there) on 2 half tank fill ups totalling £55 so not bad.
Hope you enjoy(ed) trip OP and let us know......

Orkneystar, we are coming up there some time this year, just whenever theres a good break in the weather. What ferry is the best to get ? Not fussy about bringing the car over, a passenger ferry+bus to Kirkwall is ok.

Hi there as a non islander pentland ferries is cheaper for you but I certainly have some 'friend and family' discounts spare for northlink if u are coming out of season which work for both the thurso sailing or the Aberdeen one. Google both companies and have a look.

There is also a day trip john o groats one but as you see the island in one day not for the faint hearted!

Go home tomorrow just got a peedie asda bit to get now and then off home!!!

So far am under budget but going to redo sums before I confess been good so far and nothing much extra is in shopping except a huge reduced organic turkey (6 quid reduced from16) it's in freezer at oh and will use it as giAnt ice block in cold bag tomorrow!

Well we have either done Aberdeen-Kirkwall or Stromness-Scrabster, run by Northlink Ferries. The Aberdeen route I'd not really recommend for your first trip though! We normally do Stromness-Scrabster, 3 sailings a day (2 at weekends), takes 1.5 hour, can be very bumpy though (it was on Saturday). I had avoided the other crossing (Pentland Ferries) as the arrival point in Orkney is much further away from us (St Margarets Hope) than the Northlink one (Stromness). It used to be an older boat too, although now they have this new catamaran (getting mixed reviews though). You also have to go pretty far North (Gills Bay) to get on this boat. It is a shorter and more sheltered crossing than the Northlink Stromness-Scrabster, apparently. Finally there is the John O'Groats Ferry, a passenger only ferry which meets a bus in Orkney. You have to go to the Northern Tip of Scotland and it gets you to the southern tip of Orkney (does not look impressive when you arrive- just a warning lol).

thanks both of you... I did have a wee look and there seems to be a few ferries all from different places, so that helps. I don't mind rough seas but the OH hates it LOL. I fell in love with the big Rosyth/Zeebrugge one and was gutted when they stopped running. That was a 19 hours crossing-... pure magic, I loved it.
Aberdeen is no good because it means leaving teh car there, so a long drive then a long ferry -- too complicated.
