Kitchen Quote

After a bit of advice whether this quote is fair. Unfortunately I can't be very specific which I know won't help but the guy didn't give us a written quote with a breakdown, he just told us what the price for the kitchen would be ( which I have to admit I didn't like, I like to see what I'm paying for ). He didn't leave designs or sizes either!
So included in the price ( from memory ) is:-
1 "drawer pack" which consists of a cutlery drawer then two drawers underneath
1 Double cupboard to house the washing machine
4 corner units
4 narrow cupboards
1 standard size (?) cupboard for under the sink
Laminate work tops
Stainless steel sink with Tap
Double Oven
5 Burner Hob
Extractor
Soft Close Doors
Under Cupboard Lighting
Plinth Lighting
Fitting, Electrician, Removal of current kitchen, plumbing
Total price £6200
Any opinions?

Do you at least know what type of door it is (wood, vinyl wrap, veneer, acrylic etc) what make of appliances?
I would ask them to provide you with a detailed quote (doesn't have to be priced by item, just the actual items listed) If they refuse, then just say you aren't interested and will go elsewhere...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

It's not solid wood ( he said it wasn't ), I'm pretty sure its a veneer.
I asked on the night for a break down of what was included and he just kind of shrugged and showed me the prices he had scribbled down which obviously wasn't much use to me!
To be honest although the design he did was nice I don't think I'd go with them. He was doing the whole " I can't do it any cheaper so if you want it at this price then you have to decide now! ". To which I told him there was no-way I was making a decision there and then so he could try to persuade me as much as he wanted but it would be a waste of his time... which he wasn't too happy about!
I told him I would ring him today which he said " yeah I've heard that one before, 99% of people dont bother ringing and those that do only say no! "

I'm actually quite shocked at that, I'm an ex-kitchen designer and I would NEVER say that to a potential customer, and I most certainly would ALWAYS give a detailed breakdown of what the items were.
Can you name and shame the company? If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Quick update...
Got a phone call last night from him asking if I had tried to get in touch as he'd had a missed call
I said no but I had been meaning to as we just didn't have the funds so would have to say no for now and maybe look into it in a few months time.
He then said his boss had seen the paperwork and said he'll do it for £5700 which I'm very tempted to go for ( although I was thinking about being cheeky and saying if you do it for £5500 then we'll come down on sat with the deposit as we had originally told him our budget was £5000 - £5500 )
Does that seem like a fairer price?GROCERY CHALLENGE!!October £150/£158.61

Well, it could be a fairer price and it might not be, as you still don't know what you're getting!!!If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Scary! Don't do it! I thought this was a one man band kitchen fitter. But it would seem it is a company with a showroom! If they can't give you a proper written quote itemizing all they are quoting for with really a set of plans or at least a set of pictures then absolutely walk away no matter what their price is.0

It seems a bit steep to me, BUT I have no idea on the amount of electrical work is involved, and that does need a part P registered engineer.. check this!
I would say you should be looking more like £4k-£4750- That's the sort of price i would be looking at charging for a similar set up for a Magnet kitchen with solid Oak doors...
Thing is when you deal with a bigger company they have bigger overheads than a small one like mine so they need to make more to cover the costs.
That's the rub with this credit crunch. Lots of firms got too "fat" and not at all streamlined, and those who can't adapt go to the wall. As the famous quote says, business has never been so healthy as when like chickens they have to scrap around for a few grains of seed.
Assuming they do a good job, I would say its a bit high but not rogue trader territory. Makes me think I should put my prices up!0 -
..having said that its not all about price, don't like the sound of him at all!0
-
Thanks for that.
The electrical work will mean the whole kitchen rewired, new sockets etc ( it really does need completely doing, I don't even want to think about the state of them at the moment ) and he will be a qualified electrician who can provide the necessary certificates for the work.
Believe it or not we've had a few quotes from smaller companys up to larger ones and this was by far the cheapest ( others were asking for £8000+ and would not come down at all on price! )GROCERY CHALLENGE!!October £150/£158.61
