I am not a fan of bank charges, however I think it's a bit ridiculous to claim it wasn't her fault! I mean, it's presumably at the same time every month, and the bill would normally come at least a week before the payment date, so even if she didn't know how much she owed she could have called to check!!

  • I think you will find that the call centre managers (which is who they will mean when they say manager) are actually very busy people, due to the amount of people who complain about stuff that is their fault, sorting internal issues of staff and all their real work. This means the manager will be removed from doing this and so it does cost them money.

I am against bank charges being purely arbitrary, however i do believe that when people don't pay up or mess the companies around that they should be able to recoup their losses. they are after all a business and not a government agency or a charity.

Oh to be perfect, and never forget anything... I've got all the pay-by dates in my diary and still sometimes manage to be late, as my life does not revolve around the poor banks' need for the few pounds I owe them.

It happened to me once and I said to them I expected them to make allowances as I was a good customer (which I am). They agreed.
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.
  • Has your Mum checked her balance to see how much they have refunded? I bounced a chq (first time ever) with A&L back in December and they charged me £34. I phoned them and asked them if, as a gesture of goodwill would they refund the charge as I have always conducted the account well. The cust svc lady said she could refund half. So I said thanks and thought it was better than nothing. Anyway when I checked my account the next day, she had refunded all of it. :-)

Sorry but if your Mum uses Internet Banking to move money into her A & L Acc to pay her CC bill why on earth does she not check her A & L CC online also.. especially as she had not received her statement by the usual date?

I would not rely on the Royal Mail to keep me posted (no pun intended) as to when I should transfer funds to pay a bill that I already knew was due to be paid ........

I would also like to add my voice in favour of the bank. I certainly drop my jaw at the level of certain bank charges ... which is why I expend the fairly minimal amount of effort necessary to keep my affairs in order and notice things like payment dates coming up soon, which it is well within my abilities to do.

In this, and in life in general, I'm increasingly finding that people shout loudest when they know they are in the wrong. Accept the halved charges - and the responsibility.
  • It may not cost £25 = but what about the people that are always on time??
and if all statements were recorded delivery this fee would only increase right?
  • Its easy done. I never noticed one month that I hadnt received a credit card statement and therefore didnt make a payment. When I found out I complained and they made things right. However it was only found out later that the postman hadnt been delivering letters and hundreds were found at his address - one of which was my statement.
    I can sympathise.
