Asus Eee PC 8Gb 701!!!!

Hey Everyone,

I just ordered the Asus 701 from pc world for £199 and should have it within the next week or so.I was wondering if I made the right decision and was alos wondering what everyone thinks of this netbook because as you saw from the past thread I typed I had alot of problems with the hp 2133 with not being able to get the replacement from ebuyer because they were not going to be selling it anymore. I done a like for like between the hp 2133 and the Asus 701 and the Asus came out better and they do both have linux installed and I know that if I didn't like it I could easily download xp or another one.

Thanks

It's not a bad machine, although I would compare the price to the Carphone Warehouse...

To be honest the price doesn't really bother me because im only paying £5 more compared to the hp 2133 that I would of originally got from ebuyer.

It's got a smaller screen, 7" compared to 8.9". Personally, I'd find that a bit cramped.

I have an Asus Eee and I like it. it's great for surfing the web, tinkering with docs etc. If you use google mail / docs / calendar etc then the google gears extension for firefox means that you can work on the train while you're offline and as soon as you have web connection everything syncs / sends automatically.

If you're a web developer you can also install the LAMP stack on it and do a spot of coding!

I would rather save £40 odd - but it's up to you...

I have a 701 and would recommend you choose a netbook with a 8.9" screen as an absolute minimum - 10" is preferable.

The main problem with it is that webpages simply don't fit and you have to scroll vertically and horizontally. Whatever you get, get a cheap mouse to go with it as the small resolution makes navigating using the touchpad a bit hit and miss.

@vikingaero if you're using firefox then there is an extension that makes the browser go full screen. Pressing F10 (i think) also gives you extra screen space and eliminates some scrolling

But getting too large a screen defeats the object of a ultra mobile...

The OP's original purchase had an 8.9" screen so it's not unreasonable to assume that a screen of that size would be considered too large for the intended purpose..
