my point is that regardless of sector there are very few jobs in cornwall. certainly very few that pay enough to sustain a life in the area. maybe teaching? Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -
You are right. There are very few jobs at all... as there are thousands of people looking for work, they keep a lot of salaries down at minimum wage. Jobs that would pay well up country are minimum wage.my point is that regardless of sector there are very few jobs in cornwall. certainly very few that pay enough to sustain a life in the area. maybe teaching?
Teaching is a no go. There are thousands of teachers moving into the area every year, some have taken early retirement and are applying for jobs in Cornwall. In fact, I know somebody who was a reference for a very good teacher from up country, the teacher moved to Devon... and they were asked for reference after reference after reference. In the end, my friend actually phoned up one of the councils and asked what was going on. She said "This teacher is one of the BEST I have ever come across in my entire working life. Yet I am repeatedly being asked for references - and she nevers get the job. Why?" She was informed that every teaching job was over-subscribed by hundreds and hundreds of good people.
These are the only ways to make it in Cornwall:
- work for the NHS/County Council already and secure yourself a good job before you move
- keep your existing job on a remote-working basis
- start your own business/go freelance
My advice to anybody moving into the area would always be:
- BRING your job, you're unlikely to get one in the county
- BRING your money, you're going to need it in the coming years
- BRING ALL your things, it's virtually impossible to buy things in the county0 -
Pastures new,
great post.
Aren't people odd that they can't see things objectivly. Dervish is merely seeing the issue from her own view.
It's like puppets 'o sock that bemoan Yorkshire BS not passing on full rate cuts, without taking into account the fact the society has to balance the needs of savers and borrowers.0 -
What PN is saying is very true. I also lived in Cornwall, Looe. Certainly didn`t do what some did. Turned up with some idea of getting a job, bought a house, went on the booze, family splits and house gets repoed. We bought a business in a city with a half hour commute.
The idea of moving there without something lined up is crazy, in fact many of the youngsters born there have to move out. I had/ have friends with businesses there and the last three years have been tough.
As for holiday homes, we had one by us. When the owner turned up he was a complete -rse and came close to having his lights punched out.
Dervish, I wish you the best with it.0 -
A lot of this happens in certain parts of Wales too; hence ‘Twll din pob sais.’
There has to be a bit of cross-fertilization though, or areas become stuck in the past. Most of the English I've met living in Wales have nothing but praise for their Welsh neighbours, but they are the ones who stayed, respected the culture and did their best to fit in. In a 75% holiday cottage village there's no chance of that, in Cornwall, Wales or anywhere else.0 -
Funny really that in London, "Key workers" (teachers, fireman, council workers, etc) need subsidised housing schemes etc. as they are seen as low paid.
In Cornwall (and parts of Devon) they are among the best paid jobs available as they are based on National pay scales, so are way above the local averages.
If I was a teacher/fireman or whatever, I'd be keen to move from the Midlands (for example) to Devon or Cornwall and keep the same wage.0 -
Is this post a troll?
It's hard to tell.0 -

Funnily enough the South West is the third most expensive region in the UK despite low wages!0
