Endless energy, but occasionally it does demand a ding round the respective earhole. At night I just tend to stick my head under the pillow and sigh.

Reading this I am so glad I'm not alone in doing this! Mine play fight for hours, despite being old enough to know better - I've given up any hopes of sleeping all night :)

child359, your cats sound as if they are settling in well with you, they'll have you trained in no time. I can't recommend any books on cats, but have to say that if you do read up on cat behaviour, they'll then turn round and do the exact opposite of what they're supposed to do!

That is so very, very true
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead :D

I think I need a good book on Cats. Anyone suggest a good one at all?

    I have this one

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/You-Your-Cat-David-Taylor/dp/0394729846/ref=sr_1_19?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1236852350&sr=1-19

It has a diagnostic section at the back to give advice on if puss isn't quiet itself. It has saved my £100+ in vets fees over the last 12 years :)

    Facinating read too.

My 2 boys are getting on a bit now but still scrag each other on a regular basis, and sing in the night

You DO have control over how you react :)
  • Our 2 black cats. Merlin and Ebony are brother and sister and usually get on ok. However, sometimes Ebs will be on the bed, Merlin jumps up and starts licking her all lovey dovey. This lasts for a few minutes then he grabs her by the backof the neck, and chews on it till she howls.

She usually leaps off the bed, then he takes her nice warm spot!

I shout at him you ratbag, but like a typical tom he looks at me and purrs! :D

We have several sessions a week of him chasing her up and down stairs, over the couch, table and any other obstacle!

An easy rule of thumb with cats- if you can't find any orphaned ears or clumps of fur with the skin attached (complete with blood) then they were playing. They can sound like they're murdering each other, but their play really does get that rough.

The whole evening thing is because cats are naturally crepuscular, and in a domestic setting, where you are 'mum', they carry on the behaviour that they would have done as babies. They stay in the nest and are quiet when mum is away, but when mum is about it's safe for them to leap about and have a fun time chasing each other, safe in the knowledge that they're being watched by someone who's looking after them.

They're probably going to get more confident which means that they will play more when you're out, but for the moment just be happy that they are playing and having a good time in your house (in spite of the eye treatment).

BTW- this is a fabulously warmly written cat book which will have you laughing out loud (and if you're anything like me, don't read the chapter on illness unless you want the world to see you sobbing whilst reading!).

    Thanks everyone:T

Another good night. Again I am not sure whether I am sleeping heavy and not hearing them but I do know they BOTH slept for a long while at the end of my bed....together without fighting.

Mind you by 6:45am this morning they were at it again!

The Feliway diffusers arrived today so they are now plugged in nicely, not that I think they will make much difference now anyway:o

They are both coming straight out now as soon as I come in to see me:D played again for a bit and will do again. I amy even manage to persuade Phantom to join in soon!

My 2 boys do EXACTLY the same, it's just playing. Irritating when it's on your bed at 3am, and a bit concerning at times when one goes flying against a wall, but they are having fun. This is on top of playing for a good hour each day though.

One calls to play with a bouncy ball, the other prefers to chase a softer ball tied to a piece of string and dragged around. While doing housework, etc, just tie some string and a ball to your belt/trouser loop, and let them go nuts behind you.

This is why my two kitties go into the kitchen to sleep... As soon as the lights went off they started teararsing through the house, it drove us both up the wall... Plus with a baby on the way and their love of all places comfortable, I think it's better they're used to sleeping in the kitchen for a while for fear of waking up and finding a kitty on a baby's face...
A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... I do pity my husband though, he's the one to suffer the hormones...
Krystal is so smart and funny and wonderful I am struck dumb in awe in her presence.

  • Sadly my two really do fight, Mother hates her son and will hiss and swipe at him any time he comes close. It is very much a dominance thing, he always backs off but has had 2 bad bites recently, one resulting in an £80 vets bill.
I know I should prob rehome one but love them both too much, and yes we are using the felliway thingy but it doesn't seem to make any difference.
