Bought some rump steak and microfibre cloths

Options
Now, I've never cooked steak before so what's the best way to do it? Grill?

Do I have to smack it with a hammer first?

Gonna be having it with eggs  and a bit of salad but want it to be as succulent and yummy as possible?

Also, with me cloth thingys, what exactly can I use them for? :rotfl:

And do they go in the washing machine? :undecided

    Rump steak:

Take the meat out of the fridge at least an hour before cooking if possible. Cover each side of the steak with 2-3 'turns' from the salt and pepper grinder.

Get a frying pan and put it on the stove until it's really hot, starting to smoke. Pour on about a teaspoon or two of oil and move your pan around so you have an even coating.

Cook the steak for 3 minutes on the first side and 2mins on the other.

Leave the steak to rest on a warm plate for five minutes to rest before eating.

Then experiment from there to see if you want your steak to be cooked more or less than that.

Really? That's all it takes to cook? It's probably 2cm's deep or so.

For rump steak, what I normally do is whack it with a hammer a bit (you just want to shock it a bit lol, not flatten it) then season it and fry it in a little oil and butter in a very hot pan until it's done the way you like it, it won't take long, less than eight/ten minutes in total if your steak isn't too thick - just make sure the pan is really hot. If you overcook it it'll be tough so medium (or rare) is better than well done. Also, let it rest for a couple of minutes before you eat it. I also find that it's best to get the steak out of the fridge a good half hour before you want to cook it, so that it's not fridge cold.

Microfibre cloths are great for loads of jobs - general cleaning, windows. The idea is that you can use no cleaning fluids, or at least very small amounts. You can wash them in the machine but don't use fabric conditioner with them, as it clogs up the fibres.

    Yep. That's it.

You can't really grill steak at home because you can't get the grill hot enough. At least not if you like it blue like I do.

I usually trim off some of the fat and render that down first.

I learned quite recently to* ahem * oil the meat :o rather than put the oil in the pan. Just rub some oil onto the meat, both sides, season and Robert's your Mother's brother.:D

Need the pan really really hot though.

You need to see how you like it.
Blue steak means hit the grill with it, take it off!
Rare means hit the grill leave for about 1- 2 minutes.
Medium Rare (how I like mine) hit the grill leave for 2-4minutes
Well done (yeuch!) Leave for 5-7 minutes.
