Working for someone else and juggling school hols must be a nightmare...especially when the kids get older and complain about going to wherever for the day. I used to get hardly anything done during summer hols, then spend Sept. catching up.
Perhaps something small will come in that will keep your business just ticking over.

I am up to all sorts of stuff....already sell on-line but have used it as a springboard to other things (danger of one customer and all that).
So, have a distributor set up, but only for The North at the mo...plus a possibility of a prominent concession in somewhere very 'busy'.
Also got to sort out some export but we have to be very careful not to overtrade at the mo as, if we do, it will all collapse pretty quickly.

I just want to be able to earn a decent living and keep my freedom of mind...not much to want really :o or is it?

Would you close your own shop down once this is set up? I really hope it works out for you. I wouldn't mind you giving me your web address if that is okay? Not sure if it is but even if you pm it. I am there with you regards being your own boss etc. It is really hard to think that I and possibly the OH need to look at working for someone else at some point. Do not like the idea but hey ho what else can we do.

I really hope it works out for you. I am sure you will let us know what is happening in the future.

He is still there. He is so optimistic though and thinks he is going to be busy! He has priced loads of work but tbh nothing has come in. He still believes that he will get something. I on the other never like to count my chickens and think he is in for a big shock. We are soon to have no staff at all in the next few weeks and he does not seem alarmed! We are lucky in that we have savings and no mortgage but that will not last forever. Me thinks he is burying his head in the sand.

What about you bo drinker? Did you set up the cleaning driveway business that you were thinking about?

He has as you say possibly got his head in the sand, lots have.
I didn't go any further with the cleaning idea. Work is very patchy. Looking to buy a house to get stuck into and sorted. Lucky no mortgage req'd.
I have priced work and nothing happening, people are just not spending. Good luck with what ever you do.
I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

The shop is now seen as a seperate entity STS.
It's not just about the downturn, but much more fundamental changes within my sector that the downturn has highlighted rather than caused.

Also, our area has changed massively in terms of shop types and our style of boutique is now stranded in the wrong location for the demographic that we sell to. Wasn't like that 11 years ago, loads of small individula stores just like us. Now it's a Ye Olde Oake Retail Theme Park surrounded by Starbucks, Costa, Subway and chain clothing shops.

On the whole, it's been a fairly easy decision to make.
Vile Corp Landlord pushing rent up (whilst a Mosaic fascia next door is trading for free at the moment) was the tipping point but loads of other things too numerous to mention.

The next month could be a bit tricky (I'm sure a few late night therapy posts will help me cope) but it's a necessary process to go through that will enable us to move the business forward.................one thing I am certain of, if we do nothing and 'hope for the best' we'll get fokkked.

I will PM you a bit of what I do.
