I moved back after nearly two decades away because things had apparently changed so much and for the better. Certainly some things have changed but in my experience KatieShopstoomuch is right in that there is still some sort of undercurrent of suspicion going on. I've been quizzed on my "English" accent, and on my "funny" name - knowing damn well what real answer was being sought.
My heart sunk at the hearing of the recent killings. They are utterly dispicable acts and my sympathy is with the victims' families. These criminal low-lifes must be flushed out and brought to justice. They do not represent anyone, they do not have the right to do anything, never mind commit murder, as a "voice" for any section of the community.
While I am open to a united Ireland it is most definitely not on these terms.0 -
I too live with a Catholic man and I am a protestant. I was never brought up to fear differences etc and as such just fell in love.
When I saw the news on Saturday about the soldiers being killed and then the policeman being shot last night - I got angry. I am so p***ed off at the fact that a small minority (from both sides) can be allowed to dictate this country into fear and recriminations.
It is not wanted, it is not warranted and it will not win.
I'm not going to get into the whole Ireland or part of the UK debate because to me I am Northern Irish and a part of both. Maybe not politically correct but I am proud to be from Northern Ireland. But when I see things like this, I feel ashamed and I feel angry that the rest of the world see us on news and think "violence." - That is not what the normal people of Northern Ireland want.
Flip sake our politicians aren't even representative of the people who don't care about religion and even they are able to work together.
If i knew anyone involved in any crimes of both sides I would have no hestitation in shopping them to community leaders or the police. I don't want to bring children into this; or thinking anytime I go somewhere that something might happen. As a child I remember seeing the robots deployed to the bombs and thinking that was normal!!!
Have these people learnt nothing since Omagh and Greysteel. People haven't forgotten and thats why they won't succeed and shouldn't be allowed too.MFW 148 - Mortgage £121,000 1Jan11 / Mortgage £120,300 28Jan11 / £119,808 24Feb11 / £119,400 22 April11 / £119,089 29 May11 / £118,500 October110 -
You and I both, I grew up in that era
i'm 23 and only briefly remember people being searched entering the town at the top of royal avenue. ive been lucky that i missed the "horrific" years but my parents grew up with it and i dont want it be like it was 10/15 years ago nevermind 20 years ago!
my dad's work van got "summoned" by the "bhoys" and my bro answered the door to a man with a mask and a baseball bat! and another time he was hi-jacked and told there was a bomb in his van and he had to drive to a certain place but it was a hoax-thank god!!!! but who gives them the right to do these things, it actually disgusts me!Now a mother to my beautiful daughter OliviaBorn 10th Dec 2010 weighing 7lb 1oz:A

According to the BBC website there were silent protests about the murders held in various towns around NI. I didn't know about them - does anybody know if any more are due to be held, and where and when? How can I find out for myself? I want my face to be seen at something like this.0

Yeah theres a protest in Lurgan town centre at 1pm tomorrow

I thought this was all in the past. Yes you still have the odd riot, stone throwing etc but very few instances of shootings...
It really is not he sort of environment that I would want to bring my children up in and as echoed in some previous posts, I would seriously consider leaving N.Ireland/Ireland if things do start to get any worse.
I find it unbelievable to think that these SCUM think they are achieving anything in what they do. Do they really think that the Irish Government would want to unite Ireland as one "Nation" and welcome these lowlifes??
Any person I've ever spoken to from the Republic in the past (Be they Protestant or Catholic) have all had the same thoughts on the uniting of Ireland. They don't want to touch us with a barge pole... and the incidents over the past couple of days are exactly the reason why...
my heartfelt condolances go out to the familys of those who have been killed and I pray that thats the last of it!
We're very similar - I'm RC and married to a Protestant, our 2 girls are being brought up catholic. My main, personal concern is that I live on the edge of a loyalist estate and I'm absolutely terrified that if things kick off again we'll get put out of our home. I'm in final year of my degree and once I qualify I can consider leaving the country but not if we lose our home. If things kick off again we're going to Australia, dh and I are having discussions about it tonight.
My dh and I went to the peace protests today and had our youngest dd with us, it was so heart warming to hear older people around us saying it was good to see a child there because it was the children they were doing this for. Here's hoping the idiots listen to us.Norn Iron Club member 273:beer:0 -
I wanted to go to one of the protests but I was out with work in the middle of nowhere all day so couldn't make it.
I'd be interested in going to a peace demonstration at the weekend if any. if anyone hears of any; can they post them please.
One of those arrested from Lismore was 17(although not charged yet)!! he was 7 when peace came. If ever the word indoctrination was ever appropriate it was now. Why can't people let children grow up as children instead of engaging them in old vendettas?MFW 148 - Mortgage £121,000 1Jan11 / Mortgage £120,300 28Jan11 / £119,808 24Feb11 / £119,400 22 April11 / £119,089 29 May11 / £118,500 October110
