Citroen Saxa-'P' Reg. Fuel Consumption ? please

I am posting this for a friend, who has just bought the above vehicle as a runabout.
He has had the driveshaft fixed, but is concerned about fuel consumption(petrol).

He is getting only just over 30 mpg in these first days of use, including a couple of longer drives over the weekend. Fuel gauge shows just over half-empty for 150 miles travelled.

What should he be expecting, please?

If this usage is not typical, he'd appreciate suggestions from other Citroen Saxa drivers.

Thankyou for any help.

  • the petrol gauge on pug/cits is not very accurate- in some cases they lie. the only way to get an accurate comparison is fill the tank to the top (until the pump clicks) then drive around and fill to the top again.

btw i have a xsara 1.4, and i get 33 around town, and low mid 40s on the motorway. around 38 ish combined- using the above method.

    Thankyou mr_a -
    I'll pass that on.
    Full details are :
    - petrol, Citroen Saxo FX 1.1.
    45 litre tank

The person is not unwise to car things - was a tank mechanic in Army days!- but is concerned that initially, consumption is not shaping up as he'd expected for a little car.

At that age fuel consumption will never be quite as good as it used to be. A good service might help and with local advice try and get that done by someone who can tune it up a bit.
  • Its supposed to be about 43mpg new but its a P reg & late 30s would be normal.

I would use up all the fuel. Fill it up to overflow level, keep the receipt & use it till its running out again.

I bet it comes in at mid 30s.

  • calculate the fuel consumption properly, "half a tank on the guage" is innacurate

I am aware of this, but how else to express it?
The needle was indeed just clear of, and below, the half-way mark on the gauge.

You express it in MPG. Just brim the tank and reset the trip. Drive it until most of the fuel is gone and brim the tank again and note down how much fuel you have to put in to brim the tank. Also note down how many miles you've done and then you can calculate the MPG accurately.
