Swinton trying it on

On Sunday I signed up for a car policy with Swinton via Quidco. Policy is due to start at midnight tonight.

I got a phone call today asking for my renewal and pointing out that they have NINE years accrual for full NCB whereas Churchill have 5. Needless the renewal shows 5 years and no mention of percentage. "In that case we will have to charge a further £30".

I declined and was told that there'd be an admin charge. I pointed out that the policy wasn't due to start until tomorrow so they had no costs and that I was within the 14 days cooling off period.

Needless to say there are a number of companies who undercut Swinton at that rate.

I have emailed their HO. Response indicates that they are part of Liverpool Victoria. I have written to the branch, as above.

They are not part of Liverpool Victoria. Swinton is owned by MMA Holdings (UK) plc - according to their website.

Trouble is companies like LloydsTSB who also have max requirement of 5 or 6 years for maximum NCB often only state 5+ years on the NCB proof which causes problems when someone goes to an insurer who has 9+ years NCB requirement.

Also worth remembering that Swinton are only brokers, they will deal with Insurance companies who have both 5+ years and 9+ years requirements for max NCB. The quote you went for clearly came from an insurance company with 9+ years NCB requirement based on the information that you supplied. Like you say you have a 14 day cooling off period within which to cancel.

Perhaps LV are the insurer http://www.lv.com/insurance/car_Insurance

This subject was covered the other day and the summary was ask your current Insurer to physically write a letter confirming you have 9 years no claims bonus (Assuming you have) then you can give this to the new company and Bobs your uncle and Fanny is your aunt

Would imagine the insurer is ABC - part of the LV group and is widely available through many brokers, including Swinton.

When you did the original quote did you put in 5 years NCD as your renewal states as it could be there website that has a problem. I can't see why you'd indicate their maximum NCD (9 years?) if your renewal stated 5.

Swinton policies are generally cheap and offer good levels of cover, but my god they'll sting you if you need to amend/cancel a policy.
Top Tip is £450 away from clearing the overdraft and being debt free

You are lucky not to join swinton insurance I been with them for 2 years now and this is my last time I would ever get insurance from them.
I had full cover on my car and in dec 15th last year police stopped me for no insurance I was puzzled how that when they get paid every month by direct deb.
I called the office where I got my cover and to my surprise they informed me that my cover was changed over to other car back in oct 10th 2008 I did explain I only drive and own one car how they did that but that was not all payment was made by me was in fact to other car I don't know or own at all , never the less they ware not interested at all.
I been on the road for over 2 month not knowing that my cover was not on my car but was on some one else car and I am paying for him/her insurance when my only car was not coverd.
I have made complain and called the police for fraud and they wont do any thing about it I have to go to court and get fined and point on my clean license when I have paid for my insurance to some incompetence and careless company.
Be warned stay a way from swinton insurance.

How can I when they never sent me any thing , they did say that one letter was sent to my home address but nothing at all I asked them for the proof of posting so I can contact the post office they refuse to send me any thing a payment was made by card for £2.55 to change over I asked for the card last 4 number and sorting code and name on the card they wont give that also they said I called them I got no phone record on my mobile at all or home phone that I called them but they say I could used any other phone and the card is not important as I could have used any 1 card they got it all worked out .
I did contact the Financial Ombudsman Service and made a complain I wont let them get a way with making me drive for 2 month with out insurance on my car.

I just wonder how can they get a way with that 20 year insured and first time I ever used them and last for the rest of my life even if they giving insurance for free

Why don't you ask them for a copy of all the relevant records they have for you under the Data Protecton laws. It costs you a nominal amount and may show up the information you need.

Yeah get all the records and present them for your court case.

Don't let an incompetant organisation ruin things for you.

It can affect getting jobs, other insurances, mortgage maybe? not to mention being named and shamed in your local paper etc.

    Good luck

Thank you I did ask them for all information they won't give me any thing at all not even to the police who asked them for the information about the payment that was made by a visa card as the police know that the car swinton claim a change was requested on my police to was not my car not in my name and it is registered and insured by other name and address then mine but there customers service wont do any thing they happy they did the OK in every step funny they sent me some one full privet information by mistake and I did point to them that if they can send me that what make them trusted with my information never the less they said it was nothing big and have nothing to do with my case but how they sent me some one name address date of birth car reg day time phone number I have this sent the the Financial Ombudsman Service.
I got insurance with them and some one call them claim to be me they change my cover to his car that sound the same as how do I know they did not also send some one also my information by mistake.

it could have happend to any one like me they got my money and that all they care about, the law should change if I paid them for insurance unless they provied 100% profe of one changing the insurance they are the one should be in court and not me.

I am just feel the system letting me down here we have a big company that braking the law in the date protection act when it sent me others person information and get a way with it.
What more they changed my insurance over with out me asking them but wont accept that at all.
They don't want to give me any conformation of the date they claim document was sent to me as I can ask the post office to find out was any franked letter sent to my address on this days or not.
