i think doing the http://www.iam.org.uk/ course will bring down your insurance a bit. More information on their site.

You can only do that course so many months after you passed your practical, not sure how it works for you as you'll be re-passing your practical?

I think the point custardy was making was that insurance groups for cars vary and if you are looking to save money on insurance it may be worth your while considering the lowest insurance group cars.
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)

with your driving record i would say pass plus would make little difference
drink driving is treated as something you would be likely to do again

To some extent but some Insurers (I'm thinking Fortis) have cottoned on through their claims data that the majority of drink drivers learn their lesson and in a lot of cases have a better driving claims record for the few years after getting their licence back as they are so worried about losing it again. Fortis still load drink drivers but you would be amazed how little it can be if this is the only thing against them.

If they have a second drink drive then Fortis put a real big load on as like you said that is the type of person who will keep doing it.

I was speaking to a Police Inspector the other day and he told me they target young females eg 18 to 23 in town centres at the weekend. Apparantly they have no intention of driving home and don't normally drink and drive but they get so drunk on the shots and pints of binge that they think they are safe to drive home. He said you would not believe how many they get at the weekends. David Walliams ex girlfriend who was 18 had a drink drive conviction so I guess she falls into this category

Pardon, why is that unrealistic? It is well within my means.

nearly £4k in insurance is a silly amount of money to pay
all you need to do is get a speeding ticket in that 12 month period or even worse have a bump(whether at fault or not) and its wasted money

If your prepared to pay that sort of money on insurance then it is a possibility that a broker with the right connections eg someone who deals in drivers with serious convictions like Adrian Flux would be able to negioate the price a little with the Insurers. In this case the Pass Plus might help but it might not.

If you have a wife or common law wife it will often reduce the premium by between 10% and 15% if you add her as a named driver on assuming she is a similar age with a cleanish record as Insurers find single blokes a higher risk than blokes who have partners.

If you want to get a feel for some quotes and get some advice why not pop into a local broker as they can often get good deals. They can run some quotes through and work out the best cars and whether the driving courses help. They won't charge you for the quotes / advice (They make their money in commission when / if you take a policy out)
