Taken another giant leap towards self-sufficiency today. After weeks of deigning and building a chicken run we went to look at some chickens today.
Oh dear, you know what that actually means don't you?

Hello all
I'm not the only one with secret dreams of having a bit of land it seems! I have really enjoyed reading this thread, and feel a wee bit jealous that we probably can't afford a small-holding. Still, at my age, maybe I am leaving it a bit late... OH had dreams of being able to tell people 'Gerroffa moi laand!' with sheep-dog and big crook stick to poke people with. Hmmm, perhaps just as well!
I am working on other means to get a bit more - have taken over my neighbours garden (weeding, growing veg, with his blessing I might add!), and if I carry on at this rate I might have a street's worth by the time I retire!
We wanted an allotment as the next best thing, but, waiting lists were horrendous; and we were just mentioning it to him, when he offered us his, to garden in. It was a weed patch, broken up by wonky paving when we started, now it's got raised veg bed, 2 apple trees, put in fencing for him, repaired drive gates, painted his fences, and greenhouse. He gets a real buzz out of it as he can't do it anymore & loves sitting and looking at it in summer, and we get lots of veggies between the 3 of us. Am now working on neighbour to convince him that chickens will be a great next step/beneficial to us all, but he's not convinced! Our own patch is too stuffed with plants & veg plot to get chickens in too....
Besides which, we seem to get a lot of urban foxes, so might not be the best move...? I suppose a pig in an urban area is out of the question, unless I claim its a legitimate pet and walk it on a lead?
EDIT: Think I saw something on our deeds, and there is a clause against livestock, ah well. Still, there is definitely an allowance of 'pets'.....
P.S. I am going to start a 'daydream' fund today. (Looks for loose change...) Daydream fund: March 2010 3 squid:ANow MF (thanks in part to following advice from MSE - cheers!)

Those are very handsome chickens stitching witch.
Hello Butterflymind - what a great way to landshare. Now I wonder what my neighbours would think about that...?0 -
:)Hello Rozeepozee
Nice to meet you.
It works brilliantly for us, no carbon footprint/travel, happy neighbour, more veggies, keeps both our gardens tended, but we do get on very well. Maybe there are older neighbours up your street that long to get their garden tended too, for a use of a veg plot in return? Seems to be a lot of retired folk in our street, as there's lots of bungalows here, some gardens definitely in need of tlc.:ANow MF (thanks in part to following advice from MSE - cheers!)

Hello Butterflymind it is lovely to meet you! I think my neighbours would be horrified if we offered to do their garden. They have an immaculate lawn and surrounding area where as ours looks a bit like the garden in the good life! However we love it and it gives us fresh food.
I would love to have a smallholding with huge amounts of space and lots and lots of animals. I really want to be able to rescue more animals and to get my long awaited horse.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0
