Wow, a 1000 post thread, well done CTC, you certainly identified a shared dream!
Its amazing how calming a garden is. Find myself walking round for no real reason, sometimes to relax, maybe to think, looking at all the jobs to do!
Dry this morning, tho lots of rain forecast. OH out of bed after a bad chest infection and she made it to the greenhouse for a nose around at the assorted seedlings. Seemed satisfied that I hadnt been too idle for the last few days!
Got a load of free compost yesterday from a nearby site that composts garden and kitchen waste for the local council, good stuff and will use it for topping up all the buckets and putting on the raised beds. Used some to plant out a bucket for some early onward peas saved from last year that we'd pot germinated and got pea sticks from brash in the local wood. Makes you realise how much frugal living is ingrained when you resent paying for anything0 -
thanks rhiwfield.....
when i started the thread, i honestly thought i would be laughed at, as before then when i some people i wanted asmallholding they would laugh, even my husband, but now he even helps me in the garden, and even says 'when we get our farm'...lol... which to me is the biggest step forward, even more than the money saving.... as now he takes more of an interst in the garden, and with the chickens and ducks...
I am soooooooooo proud of this thread.... as its not overwhelmed with negative posts like alot of other threads... and everyone here is lovely...helpfull and very supportive... and the main one realistic....and even though it might be years away, or might not even happen with the smallholding/land... we are doing our learning on here ready...
Butterflymind...... duck eggs are fantastic in sponge cakes.... they are sooo rich.. i also like fried duck egg and chips:rotfl: duck eggs have a stronger taste than chicken eggs, so if you are an egg lover you should like duck eggs....
well i had a lovely day yesturday in the garden.....hopeing to do a bit more before the rain comes.....
going to start planting my runner beans today too, going to sell a load of them in the farm auctions this year..... done well with them last year, and the broad beans.....also finished planting my onion sets... and hte surplus i planted into module trays too, so will sell them as well...
wish they would do smaller nets of onion sets, as if i didnt sell the surplus on, there would be way to many for my small garden....
Is it to early to sow my beetroot and carrots?Work to live= not live to work0 -
Thank you CTC for creating one of the most positive and uplifting threads on MSE. Although it may never happen on a grand scale this thread has made me view my garden as my own little smallholding and encouraged me to do things I never would have considered or thought possible. So thank you CTC and all the posters that make this thread as amazing!Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0

Now thinking of ways to convince neighbours a duck is actually a pet!
Thanks CTC, this is the best thread I've stumbled across for me, I think your dream resonates with a lot of people out there, who may, who knows, one day get the chance of owning the real thing.

Hello all
CTC: i've 'casually' mentioned to OH 'look at the lovely ducks/chicks' on your photo's (Hint, hint) as it's our anniversary soon! Still working on the nice neighbours.... Like casually dropping into the conversation remember 'Friends' episode who had a duck and a chick in their apartment, wouldn't that be great, etc, etc...?
He knows I'd love a SH, and would love one himself as he was born in the countryside (his dad was a tenant farmer), and grew up there, and he also worked in a dairy farm as a nipper. The slight lack of funding is the impediment.
Still, I am arguing the case for getting him back into practice with a teeny amount of poultry as 'you never know it might happen'.:ANow MF (thanks in part to following advice from MSE - cheers!)

Hellooo, Can I join please!!
Moved to devon 6 months ago to be with my OH.. he's a country boy at heart.. Have very little outdoor space at moment as have 4 working dogs - so huge kennel takes up more than half back garden.
We would both love a bit of land.. maybe a little shoot as well.. Not feasible at moment, but definitely something we are looking to achieve.
Glad to see other people share the dream0 -

Is it to early to sow my beetroot and carrots?
I went for a scan today and twin 1's head is really low (basically in my pelvis!) because her sister is sittting on her and she's got nowhere else to go. It's compromising my ability to plant anymore seeds. I'm gonna try and do a little bit per day but I think my gardening days are numbered. The midwife thinks I'm likely to go into labour before the date I have booked for an elective caesarean on 20th April
Wish the threat of snow would pass. It's wet, freezing and miserable here...0 -
oooo you take it easy roseepozee
well what a diff week makes...lo.... i planted my potatoes and onion sets and sowed my carrots, beetroot, and parsnip seeds last week, and ever since its rained, hailed and snowed:rotfl: so whats the likelyhood of then actually germinating now?
had my 'Dig in' seeds today, so at least i have another pack of carrot seeds...lol..
hope everyone has a nice easter weekend, and has a chance inbetween showers/rain to do a little bit in the garden:jWork to live= not live to work0 -
Finally got out into the garden today and I am exhausted! Spent time clearing out the greenhouse and doing a general tidy up
. Then I hunted out a whole load of pots, got them scrubbed, and got a wee heap of things planted including:
- tomatoes
- basil
- courgette
- peppers
- chillies
