Hermum....sure that you can use that polycarbon stuff to make some kind of cold frame which should be a great help to your seedlings....start small anyway and build up.
I think that a pinch of salad green seeds sown every few weeks ( depends on how many you are feeding), spring onions, courgettes and dwarf french beans are the things that you get the best returns from for the least effort. You could try a few raspberry canes and strawberry plants for fruit this year. Good luck with your garden.
Pleased to say that I have managed to put €400 into the daydream fund to-day, need to keep things tight for the next few weeks at least to be able to get any more in before summer.
Good luck to all

Wow, anyone looking for a place in Lincolnshire? Someone's selling this on ebay, could be a bargain, if the dorms could be lived in , item no. 1504179668320

Hello, hermum, I'm the thread's unofficial property maniac, having looked at more smallholdings than I can remember in the last few years, though none lately, I'm pleased to say.
Your Lincolnshire site would be an astounding bargain, were it not for the weasel word 'possible' in relation PP for a 4 bed house. I'd guess that would be entirely dependent upon the owner establishing a viable activity centre business first, with audited accounts, because the site and its buildings only has permission for that. Anything else represents a change of use, and it looks like the Local Council isn't playing ball regarding pure residential, or the owner would simply gain it and sell for considerably more.
That site, might gain PP for a nursery, though, so while one would not be able to live permanently in the 'bungalows,' (huts) due to them looking unlikely to meet building regs, there would be nothing preventing an owner from camping in them occasionally and using them as R&R facilities, shop, packing areas etc during the day. It could be a comfortable project......possibly! Weasel words again!
It may sound a bit harsh, but I have learned over the years that one-off unusual properties, privately advertised, with pictures taken on someone's cell phone, usually come with strings a mile long. That said, someone is currently living in a mobile home on a wholesale nursery that I turned down here in Devon a few years ago. Presumably, if they've made a go of it, they could now apply for an agriculturally tied bungalow on that site. They might get it, if their idea of 'viable' matches that of the council, and good luck to them if they do.
I'm now off to bed; a sunny but very windy day here tired me out, so I fell asleep in front of the telly!:o0 -
Hi Dave, I'm in Devon as well, Plymouth. I did think that there would be lots of hoops to jump through, but a lot of councils are encouraging work/live spaces aren't they, so maybe it could be a possibility. If that was anywhere near me I would definitely be going to take a look at it. Maybe if it was gifted to young people as an activity centre they could just have a bit of it for part of the year & run as an educational activity centre, free labour. Shame I don't want to move really.
Have you posted pics of your place from when you bought up to now, as I only came on this thread a few days ago, I kept wanting to skip the pages to see if & what you bought but managed to stop myself.
I'm surprised at how quiet this thread has become, Mrs? from Germany never posts now & I was really enjoying hers.
CTC hardly posts either, I loved reading hers. Maybe now springs almost here they will return more.0 -
Hi, I'm a REAL late comer here, but I've just found this thread, and this month my OH and I finally committed to aiming for a mini-smallholding, so I would love to join this thread, is that ok?
I've made a list of things we think we'll need to buy. Have roughly priced each of them up and added more on top (just to be on the safe side) and now have a chart on excel where I can cross off squares, each representing £10, and see what we've 'bought'.0 -
Hi Pink I only joined a few days ago, it seems that a lot of people who were posting a lot don't come on this thread much now. I'm thinking of changing my name to Norma No Mates.
Hopefully they've all managed to realise their dreams & there's no time.
Good luck have you been looking at any yet, or are you still in the planning stage? You sound mighty organised to me.0 -
Hi hermum
sorry to hear that some people no longer post, let's hope they're too busy in their small holdings!
Haven't even started looking for one yet, I'm waiting for my OH to pay off his part of the mortgage first, which will give me five years to save up. We currently only have a very small garden, just managed to squeeze in one 4ftx4ft and two 4ftx6ft raised beds in. We don't want anything big, even an urban house with a large garden will do us! A bit like the homestead in the city people, I think their property is amazing, have you seen them?
What sort of property are you looking for?0 -
Hopefully, as everyone was posting loads & then it went very quiet. I'd quite like a smallish place with hens for the eggs. Room for doing something else, grooming parlour I was thinking of, but tomorrow I may have changed my mind. My garden's not huge but more than big enough to grow all that I would need. I haven't seen the homestead in the city.
I think that by looking on other threads you can grow quite a bit in your 2 beds can't you? Will this be your first year or are you experienced GYO?0 -
I am still here!!Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0
