The cardboard will rot anyway, don't worry about that, but a bit of urine certainly won't hurt.
I think it was you that said you have rats, watch out for them getting in food waste trenches dug in the soil, especially if you cover them over with anything but soil.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
I have mentioned to my OH about urine for the garden and he is having none of it :rotfl::rotfl:. Now I have a question for you all and you are not allowed to laugh at my ignorance, what exactly is mulch? I keep hearing people talking about it however I have no idea what it is

Hello everyone. I've not been here for a while as I've been busy making five quilts for Christmas presents. Two finished, three to go.
My Sharesave cheque arrived this morning with £9.75 interest added so I've updated my total. Now I get to spend it on self-sufficiency stuff. Talking of which, it was my birthday yesterday and DH bought me a surprise present:
As we can't have goats here, I now have to decide what to do with a 5 gallon stainless steel milk churn!
DH goes in for yet another operation on Thursday, (hopefully the last one) so no heavy work for him until April. Looks like I'm doing the allotment on my own againMaking magic with fabricLight travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.0 -
Happy Birthday.
Good with the quilt making - how busy you have been. I hope your DH has a speedy recovery.0 -
Thank you for making me laugh Choille and thanks for the info CTC. So can I just check, should I be mulching over the winter? What do you all use as mulch? JUst thinking if leaf litter is good then now might be the best time for me to embrace mulching!Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0

Well, I've just been digging; good, old fashioned, back breaking stuff with a fork from the Dark Ages that I found here. It has metal reinforcement up both sides of the shaft, so perhaps I wont break it. I suppose I got about 12 m2 done, and from that came two of those big builders' bags of weeds, mainly nettles & couch. The bags weren't completely full, but if they were, I wouldn't be able to drag them into the barn for drying.
I'm afraid I have grave doubts about mulching over areas as heavily weed-infested as ours, though I'd imagine it could work for smaller areas, like raised beds. From a practicality POV, we just wouldn't have enough 'stuff.'
In the orchard, chickens will be our main weapon. Out in the main garden we will use spuds to clear land and slowly get it into more raised beds. If all else fails, and an area seems to be getting away from us, we have 100m x5m of Phormisol as insurance!:o
I'm really pleased with our soil, which has a few big stones, but is otherwise friable and easy to work, even after rain. It will be a little hungry and need water, but we're not metered and we've lots of roof space for collecting. Apparently, the stream, which is just a ditch in summer, was a good source of water until the water board 'did something' when the new main went through our land. Pity, but at least we know the water table is close to the surface at that point. Then there's the mystery 'wet bit' as well....
Happy birthday stitching witch and all the best for DH's operation. Next April will roll around soon enough, and at least he's 'inside' during the months when there's a bit less to be done.0 -

'Fraid not. That was when I came here, having been kicked out of bed for snoring.:o Happens most nights. I don't get back to sleep if I have turned-in early, and last night I was off with the fairies by about 9pm.;)0
