We've had it quite nice, but some heavy showers inbetween & strong gusts. It seems to have gone colder now it's dark & all the stars are twinkling & it's full moon.

    Maize Dave - that's amazing, wouldn't grow here I wouldn't think.

Off to make apple wine before they rot.

    Happy Halloween All.

A few posts back (yes it always takes me a while to catch up!) medlars were mentioned. They should be picked when they are quite brown (late Oct) then stored in a cool place for a few weeks - called 'bletting' - they darken in colour and soften. Then you can make them into various yummy things (just Google for ideas) like jelly to go with cold meats, or wine. Or you can make them into a fool - scoop out the soft inside, pick out the seeds which are largish and flat, mash up and mix with sugar (muscovado is my favourite) and cream. This is the only thing I've ever done with them as I only scrumped a few from a house which had one growing over the front wall! I think it can be a bit of an aquired taste but I thought it was lovely, although rich so small portions are plenty.

Cheers I might have a go at making a jelly. Visited mum yesterday and mentioned it to her she found a book that has recipes for medlar cheese (amongst lots of other random stuff...), so have been inspired. Methinks a little stroll in the park is on for tomorrow:D

Well just put my tayberry in a pot for now, will think about a final planting place when I've sorted out my garden layout a bit better. That's all I did in the garden today. It's DD1's wedding next week so am trying to get organised!

Good to hear how everyone is doing x

Was it wet across the water today? It was lovely here. DW and I were still in T shirts when it got dark. Seem to remember some good days this week last year too, though we were in Carmarthenshire then, on holiday.

I think we're in for some nasty stuff now though, and if it washes off the roads I won't complain. The farmers have been harvesting the last of the maize and bringing all of the chopped-up dead stuff back to do whatever they do with it, so there's mud and chaff everywhere in the lanes..

I'd guess that you get the weather bands a few hours before us. It was wet yesterday morning, but it brightened up and was able to fill a couple of the beds with the turf skimmed earlier. But goodness did it rain last night, and its blowing a gale now. Still, its brightening up as well so may yet be able to get on the upper parts of the meadow and rake some leavings if the wildlife trusts gang arrive, and if we can stand up in the wind ;) Full wet weather gear for the inevitable squally showers!
  • wow what a wired ....wild..... and wacky weekend..

have you seen and heard about all the floods in scotland..

we had some bad floods around by us..

got a few updates..... done the farm auction, and in between the rain.. we managed to sell some stuff....lol.... also there was an old biker who bought osme stuff off us, we got chatting, and to cut a long sotry short he came to our house yesturday and bought a bike for restoring, and we managed to get rid of our old bike junk too ...mmmmm what i ment to say was we manged to find a good home for the potential use of the bike and relient robin parts;):rotfl: even though if we advertised them all we would have had a heck of alot more money.... ( we had £450) they have been sold.. and going over the next few days...

so have one more trike project to sell, but as the guy said we would get more money by splitting it... so we will sell the huge junky back tyres and the stag back axle sperately....

so with other bits i now have 1k to add to my total.....:T

i am sooooooooooooo glad to be back up and running again on the saving front...

has anyone been to Hereford market on a wednesday?

Hey CTC glad to hear that you are back on track. I sometimes wish we had another way of generating cash but we have had no luck with ebay or gumtree and not enough to sell at a car boot sale. Even though I am in Scotland I used to spend a lot of time in Hereford and the market is lovely, not sure from a sellers point of view but I think it is great from a buyers perspective.

Do you want to just sell the textiles as is or are you looking to add value by making things from them? How about bundles of squares for quilting? Vintage clothing always goes down well, I love vintage handbags and I get them from our local church sales for pennies however you see them for £15 plus in vintage shops. Also I saw on OS you liked aprons you could make some aprons and peg bags!

CTC you have just inspired me to try again on e-bay so fingers crossed I get to generate some extra cash for my fund!

  • what i am trying to do rummer is like horses for coarses so to speak..

with the farm auction, its mainly farmers and country folk.. so i try and sell things that the farmer would buy...

wellies.....wax jackets..... overalls..... shoes/boots..... trs... shirts... flat caps..... tweed and suit style jackets..... army gear..... wool blankets for dogs etc...

next year i am hoping to do a few festivals or antique style sales, and sell the vintage stuff... like the welsh blankets.. linen .....clothes etc...but i have been looking at the prices of the pitches for these.. and some of them are mega money:eek: so i must just do one and see...

so i might just stick to local or farm events...auctions/shows..

so i need to think of items that i could sell( along side the things i am allready selling) but obiusly the coats will not sell as well in the summer, so need to get my thinking cap on and think of things that farmers and country people would NEED ;)to buy in the summer...lol...

as for adding extra value to the vintage textiles...i dont think the farm auction/market is the place for it...well not the one i do anyway..as the normal carbooters etc that go there normally moan that they dont take much....well i dont think a 60 - 70 year old farmer would be interested in buying a tellytubby for himself....:rotfl:

lol..... maybe you inspired yourself, by talking about how i could maximise my vintage stuff....:T

i havent listed anything for a week or two, because of the postal strike... so i think i will try and list a few things.. i am finding the vintage and material in general is selling ok... i know on the ebay board people are moaning that clothes are not selling..

i havent added it to my total, but i am saving £250 per month with lloyds tsb savings account, so when the year is up ( and the interest rate sinks to about 0.000000000000000001%....lol... i will add that to my total.... as i know if i add the amount every month i will totally get confused...lol...

I've not been to Hereford Market, CTC, but Abergavenny is pretty big; it pulls in sellers from as far as the Midlands. Tuesdays, I think, for the main one. We always liked Abergavenny, but most property with land moved out of our reach there, being a bit rare.

I agree about horses for courses, which is why we avoid horse and dog events. We tried them, but dog & horse people don't go for flowers much! We'd do general country shows, like Frome Show, but they were only average. For us, plant fairs were obviously best, followed by village days and open gardens, then markets.

Good to see your fund is up and running again!
