OH WOW, I found this thread when I was browsing - this is my dream too! :T Actually I've been dreaming of buying a piece of land to build a cob house on with room for veg, chickens etc...and then a cottage near us is being rebuilt which I fell in love with and has a big back garden with huge potential (currently looks worse than your MiL's garden did CTC!) It is MIGHTILY expensive of course but I haven't ruled it out completely yet...
A little about me - I usually hang out on the 4k thread, trying to live frugally and ethically (there are lots of smallholding dreamers on there too :T). It's not always an easy mix and at the moment I am sidetracked as we are living in Nepal doing voluntary work. However, once we're back and have a place to live again (our house or the cottage!), I'm getting back on the horse with everything :j
Good luck to everyone pursuing or living their dream, I look forward to reading about your progress. The 1,000 Day Challenge:Feb 16, 2016500/30,000

Hi everyone,
You are all doing so well, Rhiwfield your garden looks fantastic! And welcome to Bails!
A few posts back (yes it always takes me a while to catch up!) medlars were mentioned. They should be picked when they are quite brown (late Oct) then stored in a cool place for a few weeks - called 'bletting' - they darken in colour and soften. Then you can make them into various yummy things (just Google for ideas) like jelly to go with cold meats, or wine. Or you can make them into a fool - scoop out the soft inside, pick out the seeds which are largish and flat, mash up and mix with sugar (muscovado is my favourite) and cream. This is the only thing I've ever done with them as I only scrumped a few from a house which had one growing over the front wall! I think it can be a bit of an aquired taste but I thought it was lovely, although rich so small portions are plenty.0 -
