LIR - Hope the hens okay. The vet is about 70 miles away & I don't think I've ever taken a hen there - well I know I haven't. I did once take a lamb in the boot of the car. It had to be put down which I kinda half knew but wanted to make sure.
I must get some anti biotics to keep in the fridge for chickens. I think a jab might of made a difference when I first thought it wasn't 'right'. But - there again I think it may have been a runt & dragged from hundreds of miles to a sale & then the stress of that - the noise in the sale is incredible & people pressing their faces against the cages all day - & then the move here can't have helped.
If you keep livestock, you end up with dead stock - as they say.
And No I am not going to eat it - I jest, as someone we know eats things that die - blurggg.0 -
Sorry to hear the chickens are not doing well.
I have just been through my seed box and have made a list of all the ones that I have plus I just took advantage of the T&M £10 offer so I have a few unusual seeds for next year. I really want to make the most of the garden next year and have it full of delicious veg for the family and my many animals. What I am finding difficult though is thinking about where to plant things. I really liked the Alys Fowler approach and I have her book to read through but it is trying to apply those principles to what I have that is tricky!Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
Rummer, welcome back, I think Geoff Hamilton advocated a similar approach (ornamental kitchen garden?) but I'm far happier having an organised bed system to grow a substantial amount of veg and follow a rotation approach
Maggie/Lir, I tend to agree that pets should be properly licensed and thoroughly agree that pets provide companionship and can be useful for guarding/mousing. My dog probably equates to a Mini MOT failure with defective exhaust, lights, brakes and engine omissionsThe whole (people) overpopulation issue is one that has to be tackled at some point though.
Choille/Lir, sorry about the chickens, keeping my fingers crossed for ours.
Took stock of the garden as winter approaches. Even with one or two notable failures (leeks & peppers ) we've had a grand amount of stuff this year and its still coming strongWe dont try to grow old potatoes but get 3-4 months of new potatoes, most other fruit and veg we make the attempt to grow all our needs. Trouble is the garden is now just as we want, so with no winter projects and as DW gets better to take over the taxi duties, guess who's got a long decorating list?

We finally uncovered the last third of the allotment yesterday and DH has started to dig it over hoping that the frosts will help break it up. This morning we awoke to a hard frost so someone "up there" was listening to us!
The chickens are moulting so no eggs at the moment and they do look very odd, a bit like vultures with their bare heads and necks. DS3 bought me an egg-skelter for my birthday last week, but it looks a bit sad with just four eggs on it.Making magic with fabricLight travels faster than sound. Blerch. It was an abcess and left the vet to lance it but under gas it became clear it was extensive inside....I asked them to let her go while asleep.0

Welcome back Rummer, sorry you've had a tough time; hope things continue to improve.
Sorry about everyone's chicken problems too, these things do happen of course but they seem to all be happening at once!
Thanks all for the septic tank advice, I think I will have to take the plunge (hopefully not literally!) and see if I can get inside through the manhole for a proper look. If it did prove usable it would be easy to collect water from the shed roof to fill it up.0 -
