Trog - You would need to sterilise the tank I would think & seal up the drains.
Dave - how did you tighten up the poly-tunnel? I still have done nowt about ours, ridiculous I know, but just don't seem to have the time or inclination.
It lashed it down yesterday & one wonders how much rain can fall. The ground squelches & is very slippy underfoot.
I think I have a load of dinners, ie I think I have more cockerels than hens in this new load.0 -

It isn't a conventional model; it has a sort of space frame of wood inside and the hoops are 25mm polypipe. Very clever design, but infuriatingly low and prone to contact with heads...:(
All I did was extend the frame with small lengths of wood, and then screwed the polypipe to them taking up the slack in the cover. If it were to flap about enough, it could tear. It's the second time I've done this, and it'll be the last!0 -
Good for you Dave - even 'skinning' them is so hard, putting n a new cover. I do envy a friend who has one of those keder [sp?] houses, but they are wealthy. I would love one of those. So if any of you are wondering what to get me for my Christmas..........:j

I seem to spend a lot of time reading here (and catching up at the moment!) but don't have anything very exciting to add myself! Love all the animal stories though. I have promised myself that if I can make my work-at-home plan work out I will get some chickens next year, so if I do I may well be asking if any of you want to sell some!
Now I may have asked this before - I have a terrible memory - but the recent rain has brought the subject to the fore again. We recently cleared some grass in our garden to put up a 'new' shed, and found a manhole cover which we think leads to an old septic tank. No longer in use, but not filled in either. We thought before of trying to put some sort of rainwater storage tank somewhere so I thought perhaps we could re-use this as a ready-made storage facility. Do you think this idea would work? Sorry if I already asked about this - too many things to think about and haven't got around to doing anything about it yet!
good luck0 -

hi, i used the builders damp course sheet plastic [from any big builders yard]when i had a poly tunnel. it comes in incredibly HUGE widths and its all folded so easy to unfold on site, off the rolls in length and comes in various guages of strength. much much cheaper but just as good as what the poly tunnel people sell. [its probably same stuff??]
Don't think so, unless it's UV stabilised and guaranteed to last at least 5 years. I would do what I did this year; find a polytunnel maker who has ends of rolls, then haggle!
Choille, Keder greenhouses are smart, but they aren't in the spirit of polytunnels, and I'm not sure they would give me the ventilation I'm looking for. The one I'll be putting up will have an entirely vented side, plus two sets of double sliding doors. Everything I've ever worked with in the greenhouse line has been too hot in summer, so I'm hoping to solve that.
Lir, while I commiserate, I'm bound to ask, is it Bambi-burgers this weekend?
Someone dropped a pheasant off here this afternoon, having shot a couple too many. I think we will be drawing lots to see who gets to pluck it. Long time since I did one.0 -
Nope, no one stopped, and yes, he's now butchered. I would have liked to let it hang, but tempis fugit. Its taken us three hours to butcher him and hose down.0

Your poly tunnel sounds the biz - I must get on with ours - just seems that I aint getting on with what I should be.
LIR - Isn't the stag stinking, in rut, inedible? People do eat them here after being mown down by cars but aren't they all bashed? I know it's better to use the meat, but I don't know if it'd be good..............
We had one run into us the other year & just about totalled the car - what a damage & we were without for ages, got it back & then something major went on the car that was probably also been damaged by the Kamikazi deer but too late to claim that on the insurance. I was glad the hind died instantly as I hate the thought of them wriggling about in the road - I know some people carry spades an' that to finish them off, but I think I'd be a bit hopeless at that.0
