Pleased to have stumbled upon this thread.

Good luck with your challenge! I'd like to join you but it feels so far off for me at the minute that I'm just at a loss at how it can happen. I can't even fathom how we can afford to buy a two bed terraced at this moment but I have a plan, I'm in education and I'm determined to one day have a better life.

My dream is for a small home, hopefully a bungalow with a patch of land for chickens and fruit veg plot. Nothing massive although a good sized plot would be nice. An open, real fire, oak flooring. I've got to stop before I upset myself. A day dream or a pipe dream?

Does anyone ever doubt they'll ever get there and did you feel like this at the beginning.

    Got to try right?

Yes, yes and yes. We've changed and adjusted what we were looking for over the last years. Ironically we've ended up in something more like what we were originally wanting but couldn't afford. And its also daunting once you have it because things cost money. chickens supply free eggs, but also need somewhere to live and something to eat...growing veg means buying seed etc etc. Often I feel a bit fur coat no knickers atm, with a beautiful house and lnd, but cobbled together fencing and patching leaks.

Great you have it though. You can keep a hold of it while you make it better/work for you. All fur coat and no knickers? I feel like that sometimes but it's more to do with feeling proud when you've nothing to show you're doing well for yourself.

I think I need to begin to think positively. I think I shall get myself a pot, label it dream and put whatever I can in there.

Everyone has to start somewhere, better to strive for something than to just give up!

    Welcome.

My ideas of what I want to do have changed drastically over the years, partly as I grew older and partly as I grew more realistic about how hard it is even to garden well and the finances; as John Seymour said long ago, you need bread and not the sort made with flour. And he was talking when the farm gate prices were much higher than the input prices comparatively and when things like the wool clip earned money.

If this is your long term ambition think two ways:

    1. When that unexpected bit of money comes along, it heads towards the dream fund if possible.

    2. It is amazing how many people can get land if they try. The head gardener here http://www.kippaxcsa.co.uk/ had a year's experience working on a CSA at Swillington and just asked after a three acre field near her lodgings out of sheer nerve. And got it.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

my only advise is dont set your sights too high, think outside the box... how far can you travel to remain working? properties are often cheaper outside "expensive" county borders. go for enough space that you need rather than rooms you will never use. i have always said i would always go for outside space rather than indoor space. tired paintwork puts a lot off and devalues properties. also look at renting an estate cottage?? often go with good plots. will at least give you an idea if the "life" suits you before you commit? good luck

Thanks for that, it does help.

We rent privately now, we're settled here as DD's schools are here but in a few years we have our sights on a couple of desirable areas near here. We won't be able to even think of a mortgage then, not until i'm qualified and working a decent income but we will be able to have the pick of the crop in an area we want for a while until that deposit is there. I envisage this being a journey of 10 years + but I'll be in my 40's by then, not too late huh?

That's outstanding! I'm so pleased for you! Its something I keep meaning to try but can't quite get my head round, but hurrah for you!

I hardly dare tell you about the news story from world horse welfare on tv tonight...people giving up horses because of the cost. Its inevitable, prices have rocketed for quite ''ordinary'' horses and people have really over reached themselves financially and with their expectation of their ablity and time. :( We're open to the right new horses joining us now...we have too much grass and the right horse can be cost neutral to me, and its hard not to be distracted by lots of lovely horses but the right long termer hasn't reared its head yet :(

You can tell you're a chicken keeper when you look back over what you've cooked last week and it includes two souffles, chocolate mousse, a baked custard, an egg every morning and you were away for four of those days! The pain is you just know when you want to bake for christmas they will all be on winter strike. I found one of my littlies has made a nest in the haybarn.

The weather has put paid to much I've been getting on with, but this morning the heavy rain had left puddles which helped me get on with sweeping, the water helping move everything along well :) No chance of moving any of the log still sitting on the back lawn now, as its so slushy. But the ditches on the road side could do with a dig out.....I'm desperately trying to find something lighter to do!
