Yes they did, by the wringing the neck 'traditional' method, the 'traffic cone' and the 'broomstick' method. See PDF below:

Years ago, I used to use 'the chop' with a heavy machete, mainly because the margin for error seemed less.
The older I get, the less I like any of them, but it would be hypocritical to make someone else do it.0 -
CTC, thanks for the PM and noted.
Lotus-Eater, it really was bad. The only consolation would be that the birds must have had good immune systems! I'd seen discussions on creosote substitute on the poultry forums but hadnt realised it was so effective for red mite. With the plastic coop it'll be a case of pressure washing every so often. Green Frog swear that temperatures are not a problem, and the recycled plastic components are pretty substantial, but as said, I know I'm taking a bit of a chance.
Davesnave, how small a world is that! I did take some comfort from seeing the coop was designed by apparently experienced chicken breeders.

DW now wants a Bluebelle, Speckledy and a Black Rock.
If she wants something friendly and amusing with huge character then try a Bovans Nera. We have one Sussex Star, two Bluebelles and one Bovans Nera. Although we've only had them a few weeks the little Bovans is so funny, always by my side whilst digging (she grabs the bugs from my hand!) and she makes the most amusing noise - a bit like the 15.43 from Charing Cross!
I wanted a Speckledy instead of two Bluebelles but our supplier had none - maybe next timeMaking magic with fabricLight travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.0 -

Tell him you are not having a cockeral and that when I moved in here and told the neighbours I was having chickens, they thought exactly the same as yours, now after 7 years they love them and say they like the soft clucking noises they make when they are looking for food. No problem with smell or noise, although they did complain with one bantam cockeral I had, but then he was keeping even me awake at 4am most days......
Smell can normally be dealt with by cleaning out regularly and putting the cleanings out on a covered compost heap. If you rotate them around ground, it also helps the smell. But it will smell a bit sometimes, but honestly not that bad, someone next door shouldn't have a problem with it.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
thanks for that ... i really do fancy having some ... but not till next year as i want to get established with the garden this year ... the year after that i fancy bee's ... gonna have to hide them from the neighbours i think he he ... i dont have a huge garden ... but it is big enough to accomadate the bee's and chickens and plants0

Hi,
I don't know whether this has been mentioned before, but has anyone seen this book?
The Self-Sufficiency Bible by Simon Dawson
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1906787689/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE
If so, what did you think of it? I'm wondering whether it would be a good addition to my 'daydream library!'
Thanks!0 -
