Do people laugh at your library books?

I've noticed that whenever I'm reading a library book, say at lunch time, someone will come along and look for a moment, laugh and say 'is that a library book?' in the same tone of voice as one might say 'are your shoes mended with cardboard?'
I usually reply something like 'yes...is there something amusing about it' and they reply 'no, no...I used to go to the library a lot, but don't seem to have time any more'.
Yes, because you're too busy working to earn money to buy new books! Wallies, the joke's on them if they're paying £££s for books that just get read and forgotten about...

Have to say I am a HUGE fan of libraries and have never encountered that type of thing.Like you said more fool them for spending the best part of a tenner a time on books they will probably never read again. I will have to look up but I did a survey last year on how much I would have spent if I had bought all the books I borrowed. It was a staggering amount not including the dvds etc. What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0

Lol i totally agree with OP some people do look at you like your a pauper or something just because you dont want to spend £££ on books that you don't want/need to own but that you want to read!! I don't want to own 7 books on IBS and medical conditions but i want to read them!
More fool them for spending money on books they'll probably never finish!Debt which IS NOW GONE before 31.12.2011: CC - GONE!!! :j Loan: GONE!! :j

I don't care!!!
Having trained and worked in Libraries I preach the message of borrowing books. I do own a lot of them, but I decided long ago that I would only buy books I would read again and again. Most I buy, therefore I have already read.
The exception is charity shop books for light fiction.0 -
Another ardent library fan here too. My friend & I go most weeks & get 7 or 8 books, a mixture of fiction & non-fiction, and usually a dvd too. I read very quickly & can't justify to myself paying £8.99 for a book that I'll plough through in 3 days!! I also love finding an author that I've not read before & then finding out that they have written lots of books. I did this with James Patterson last year & read nearly all of his - for free lol!0

I work in a library. If someone laughed at my books, I'd kick them out

I too read a lot of library books, but the only person laughing is me. I do read a fair amount of serious stuff, but I really love a book with a "tena moment" in every chapter :rotfl:Official DFW Nerd Club - Member # 593 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts!0

I actually find it a lot cheaper to buy books from a charity shop than keping on top of the library fines!!0

If you just phone the library on the day that the books are due back, they will renew them over the phone for you. At least my library does this.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member # 593 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts!0 -

Indeed. As long as no one else has reserved the book, that is.0
