Question on how internet connections work?

I'm getting the internet hooked up, and the company providing it, is saying I have to lease or buy a modem from them. I also want to get wireless hookup. My question is can I buy a modem/router from Best Buy and will it still work? Or do I need theirs?

If you're on ADSL broadband, then yes, any ADSL compatible wireless router should work. But the ISP's normally only support the models they supply. Leasing it is a crazy idea, you can buy a perfectly good wireless router for £25 on eBay.
Not sure about Virgin Media cable service though, as this is usually an engineer install.
Would help if you gave the name of your ISP.
