If it's a UK mobile it'll cost exactly the same to call it as it does when it's in the UK.

It'll cost her a fortune to receive the call though so she won't be your best mate when she gets the bill.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Get her to use a local sim and then use one of the providers listed on the callchecker starting from 4p/min. If the phone isn't unlocked then try a landline? Perhaps the hotel's.

If your mothers phone is registered in the UK the charge to you will be the same as if you were calling her in the UK.

However, she will have to pay roaming charges in order to receive your call. It's not cheap and it is dependent on which network and tariff she is on!

Use a local SIM in an unlocked phone - the incoming calls are free

There are two networks in Egypt, Mobinil and Vodafone

The outgoing calls with those SIMs are 40 or 50p per minute (a lot cheaper than roaming with 3), so if you are the only person she'll speak to, you can prearrange that she'll call and hang up, then you call back using cheap call providers in the Callchecker.

If she wants to make quite a few other calls, then it would be worth setting up an account with a callback service, which would mean calls at about 13p per minute.
