We also got a bus to Niagara Falls from Toronto. It was cheap and a reasonably short journey. .

Megabus do some routes around there too www.megabus.com/us.

They go from Niagara Falls (US side) to Toronto and to New York etc. Very cheap if booked in advance.

thanks for all the replies, after looking at all the options we decided to catch a bus there.
The journey was only an hour and a half and $44 Canadian dollars return, the have various times which made it a better option than the train.
The train only has two services a day one about 8am and one around 5pm neither time was great.

Niagara Falls was great if you ignore the tacky seaside bit at clifton hills

If we flew into NYC is it quite a straightforward journey by car?

The drive itself is very straightforward, however, the route we took was pretty boring to say the least and having driven the route, it became apparent that whilst we took the quickest route, had we chosen a slightly longer route, the scenery would have been a whole lot better. :)

If all you are trying to do is to get from A to B, then the route is not an issue, but assuming you want to stop and smell the roses, my recommendation would be to do your research on the route...... That and be prepared for yank lorry drivers who take a lifetime to overtake each other. ;)

Like previous poster said journey is easy (One road the 90 Thruway with tolls !) but can be boring, maybe if you do go by car call in at the finger lakes in Upper NY state apart from that Syracuse Rochester and Buffalo offer nothing exciting. ;)
