    Cost of a cat? Well as a certain credit card ad says "Priceless"
    Why. Well for a start they steal - your heart. They cost - in tears when we have to say goodbye. Yet the happiness they give to us ailurophiles is immeasurable by any human monetary standards.

    (BTW that goes for all our beloved animals whether furry, feathered, scaly or whatever)
    Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)
  • I think you can easily feed a cat for £6-£7 per month.
    Buy worming / fles treatments online, as has been said - much cheaper.
    Don't bother buying a bed - the cat will much prefer a cardboard box!
    If you are going for a kitten, consider getting 2. They will keep each other amused and you might save some money on replacement furniture!

    Agree about getting a pair. We had brothers from 8 weeks old. One now left is 16 but unfortunately the other died 4 years ago following a car accident ( broke my heart).
    They really do keep each other company but ofcourse it doubles the expense. The most noticable for me was the injections.
    I have never had pet insurance and we did have to pay out over £400 when he got run over, however this was for a weeks 'hospital' stay where he had a nurse sleep over one night and we used to visit him. The vet kept the price as low as possible as we did not have insurance.

    considering his life span it still worked out much cheaper not to have insurance.
  • Don't bother with a catbed by the way... they'll just ignore it and pick somewhere else ^_^

    Oh and we bought ours loads of toys, and her favourite toy... is the pully-plastic bit from the top of milk bottles. Crazy for them! :D

    I spend £10 pm on cat litter as indoor cat mostly.

    Spend £25 pm on Whiskas Pouches (but I have some bulk bought £2.25x8=18.00 from Pets@home for several months)

    I buy Whiskas or Go cat / Go cat Indoor Biscuits as well regularly / on offer.

    Worming tablets now and again.

    Toys now and again

    For 2 per month;

    Litter - £20 (£13 if 1)
    Food - £80
    Insurance - £18

    They are the main expenses. Mine are indoors so no fleas and worming is done every 6 months for about a fiver. You do get some economies of scale for having 2. Litter is probably only an extra 3-% for having a 2nd as they share a tray. Less initial outlay on that, toys they share, they have 1 catbed that one tends to use more than the other. Food is probably the biggest expenditure as I like to make sure they eat food with meat in it (50%+ meat content) as opposed to 4% 'derivatives' which the household stuff is full of.

    When they're new costs are quite a big hit;

    Litter tray
    £15 for a hooded one
    £40 for a cat tree
    £10 bed
    £15 toys
    £45 neutering
    £50 jabs
    £5 bowls

    we use crystal silica gel cat litter and one bag lasts a whole month, about a fiver! i dont understand why more people dont use it? unless of course your cats a bit fussy about what it poos in. we started our kitten off on it so shes knows no different. it sucks all the moisture out of poo so you can take it out really easily and absorbs all her wee with no smell. its brill and very MSE

    ps... me and my partner only have a shopping bill of about £70 per month.... your cats eat better than us coolio!
