How do I go about changing PAYG phones

I'm not very expert when it comes to mobiles so I thought I would access the information I need from this wonderful world called money saving expert forums. I have a nokia phone on virgin PAYG, now my phone is old and I want to chnage to a more uptodate version. Do I have to stick with a PAYG phone from virgin if I want to keep my number (which I really do if poss) or can I go to any network? Woolworths are offering a Vodafone Samsung X640 for £59.99 reduced from £199.99 and I thought that was a good deal but will I be able to put my sim card into it as its Vodaphone?
Please help
Thanks

You could get the phone unlocked, which costs about £10, in which case you can just stick your virgin card in there, or you can have search round on the net to see if you can unlock it yourself for free...
Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam
  • Try the Virgin website here, they have the one you want reconditioned for £49.99 and if you register your own number on the website you can get the phone for £10 less as you won't need a simcard.

I have bought a couple of reconditioned phones from Virgin and they are in excellent condition and are returns due to their 28 day return policy.

How do I find out if I can get it unlocked? Is there a forum/thread on here which might be able to help? Do I just post with the name of the phone and the company? Is it best to find out if I can get it unlocked first before I buy? If I can't will vodaphone allow me to keep the number I have with Virgin?
Sorry for all the questions but as I said I'm really not good with all this mobile stuff!!
    Thanks

Thanks for that. To pick your brain even further do you know which phones also have MP3 in them as I also need an MP3 and thought I might combine the two. Basically all I need is a new phone with MP3 if poss (obviously the best deal I can get - I am a money saver after all!!), keep my number, on PAYG. Any advice would be gratefully recieved.
    Thanks for your help
