Irish buyer and insurance

I have sold an item on ebay with £1.50 postage with the intention of sending the item non special. Now The winning bidder happens to be from londonderry and registered on 3rd March this year and has zero feedback. Alarm bells are ringing and I added £3.10 insurance to the postage costs taking the total to £4.60 which is what it will cost to send special delivery. The winner paid before I had chance to send the invoice out and so I refunded them and sent them the revised invoice. Is it acceptable to put insurance on after the auction? I know I am going to get slated for what I have done!

I will point out that Londonderry is in Northern Ireland, and is therefore part of the UK...

  • i don't think you can add extra costs after the auction is finished. What has sendig it to Londonderry got to do with anything? It's still in the UK. And if you didn't want zero feedback peeps from bidding I think thereis a way to block them.

You should sell the item for the price agreed.

no you cannot add extra insurance
if you wanted insurance to protect yourself(it means nothing to the buyer) then this must be listed in the listing costs

Why the worry about LondonDerry? It really is not an acceptable practice to insist on sending items special just because you don't like the sound of the place. I'm sure it is very nice there, not that I have ever been.

It is just because it is abroad. I am paranoid about a chargeback for non delivery because lately I have been badly stung on ebay lately.

It isn't abroad though, merely across water. I would have the same concerns if you suddenly took a dislike to the Isle of Wight on the basis you have to take a ferry to get there.

Derry is NOT abroad! Its part of the UK (although there may be a few arguments about whether it should be, that is what it is-part of UK.)
would you be antsy if it was isle of scilly or isle of man etc? It does seem sometimes that mainland people do not understand geography very much :D

    Geography Skilz!

It's not abroad, Londonderry is in Northern Ireland which is part of Great Britain.

It just so happens it's in the news today as well! That Island over there is actually split in to two. The Republic of Ireland which is a separate country and is where they take that foreign money called Euros, have police called Garda and had that little know event the Tatoes Famine. Northern Ireland is in the north of the land mass, they happen to take £Pounds, have police called police/RUC. This has all caused some friction, and last night people who don't think NI should be part of the U.K shot two British soldiers, this happened in the British land called Northern Ireland, which happens to be where you'll find a British city called Londonderry.

So in short I would the cross the foreign country issue off the list, but I would be very worried attacks by Irish dissidents and perhaps consider delivery it in person with a armed escort.

Sorry I should have added if you don't want to sell to real overseas countries just block them from your auctions:

    http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/sell/buyer-requirements.html

Start from here to set buyer requirements to exclude overseas bidders or bidders with NPB strikes etc.
