Too scared to work out what I owe

moozie, i read about your problems, and know how you feel both myself and my partner ran up debts just a few years ago when we were 18/19 years old and still have debts now. I wish i hadn't done it but when your young and banks offer you loans and credit cards you think it wont happen to you. My partner has payed off a big lump of his debts with some money he was owed but he wanted to spend that on ther things but needed to get his debts paid off. We have no credit or debit cards and its hard as for simple things like booking something over the phone you can't do it without one and the banks are not keen to give you one if you have bad credit. There is a company called specrum who come to your house and work out what you owe and then they contact the companies and you pay it through them, im not sure how it works but I don't think you pay spectrum anything they are just working for you. You come to some agreement of how much you can afford to pay each month but it maybe worth a try! I myself still owe over £5,000 and am still apying it off, but after watching several episodes of martin's show I realised there are ways to save and now I think I am doing that and hopefully will get my debts apid off in no time, but you do have to face your problems, I used to be the same and hide letters in the drawer not wanting to open them! But once its addressed then alot of companies will try to help you as best they can. Good Luck! Lucylu23 xxx0

Hi Moozie
You are an absolute inspiration!
Surprised that we are saying that? Just look through from the start of your thread, how lost and scared you sounded at first, and in just a small amount of time you have made MASSIVE differences to the situation.
Your thread has been viewed 5175 times! Not only are you facing your own situation which takes guts, but your thread is helping all the others on here to follow your example.
Yes it is VERY scary working out the total debt...but as I'm sure you've found out, doing that and taking the first steps are empowering and it's not HALF as scary as laying awake at night worrying about the unknown!
I was feeling quite down today but I want you to know that just by following your thread I feel tons better already!
I hope your husband is proud of your acheivements! have you shown him this thread? you should.
I wish you tons of happiness...you deserve it!
Keep posting on the forum...WELCOME to the MSE family.

Moozie, you've done brilliantly!
Tears in my eyes as I read your posts - been there, still wearing the t-shirt, but working hard to reach the day of freedom.
Good luck and keep posting! GG xx0 -

I agree with Old Iron Balls. Once I knew the total owed, horrendous though it was, it gave me a definite figure to work with & enabled me to have a rough idea of when it will be paid off which all being well will be May 2008.Donedoingdebt Lightbulb moment January 2000. Debt at highest approx £102,000. Debt now (October 2009 - absolutely fork all!!!)

hi
I am in exactly or probaly even worse a boat than you so dont feel bad, I am desperate to get out of debt or a least control it and really look forward to Martins money tips.
My OH has a really good job but likes the lifestyle (on his card) as wellI try to save money wherever I can but he just seems to be burying his head.
I have told him how I cant sleep at night anymore and worry continually so he did send of for a debt free pack ( it has sat in our kitchen for over a week, unread by him, page by page by me!)
We have children used to a good life which is difficult to change as they dont realise the debt we are in but I keep reminding him of our older life how we will live with these huge debts how do i make him see sense?
sorry I am the miserable one now
Any suggestions ?
Thanks!0
