but will the economic crisis be the force to get people to GYO?
but yes... too many don't give a toss
Who knows where we will be in five years....... financial disaster, or comfortable muddling along.
The fact is as a race, we never do anything until we are forced to, we are all too selfish. Nothing is going to be done about Global warming until it's too late, nothing is going to be done about Britain growing enough of our own food until something happens that makes it too expensive or impossible to import food. And that my friends is going to be a catastrophe, with food shortages all round.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
There was a big article about a huge polytunnel/greenhouse complex being built (think its in Kent?) on the news recently.
It is starting to supply the supermarkets now so it'll be interesting to see if food prices fall at all.
There was however a mighty hoo ha about it being built! Surely it makes sense though in these times to produce more of our own food,it also employs a great number of people.
I also agree too many people don't give a toss nowadays and TBH sadly if there was some sort of disaster god forbid,we'd see nothing like the 'wartime spirit' come to the fore...0 -
well i am doing my bit...lol...
later on i am buying a kg of runner beans and borad bean seeds to bring on to sell to make some extra pennies for my daydream fun.... and what ever plants i dont sell will be grown on, to fill my freezer and to sell some surplus beans:D ...well thats the plan anyway:rotfl:Work to live= not live to work0 -

You drive me mad! Go to mainland Europe and see them there, they are no trouble! I tell you what, it seriously makes my blood boil and I am filled with disgust when I see people complaining that they be forced to live a kilometre away from a new installation, so they mount campaigns to stop the building.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
Lotus-Eater....I completely agree. I think turbines are fantastic - and no I don't work for a company or have anything to do with them. I think EVERY house should have one in their back garden..or at least every house should have some kind of renewable energy resource.
AS for GYO....we (me, DH & Mum) have an allotment. We've had it now for 4 years. I hate hate hate HATE gardening, but help them out by harvesting, eating, and advising on what to grow where! We have several friends who buy our surplus off us and now have had a couple of local "eaterys" approach us to supply them as well! Woohoo good old fashioned home grown food.
Also regarding exotic fruit...my MD grows in his greenhouse peaches, grapes and apricots...so in theory we could grow some of the exotic stuff here as well?? In the right conditions of course.
Totally agree that we have FAR TOO MANY UNGRATEFUL so and so's in our population here.Banana LoversBuy your bananas in bunches of 5 on Sunday. Then arrange them in order of ripeness and write a day of the week on each banana in felt pen, Monday on the ripest, Friday on the greenest to save time making those decisions on a hectic weekday morning0 -

My mate has a large polytunnel, it never ceases to amaze me what exotics he can successfully grow in there.0

The first pineapple grown in the UK was in 1600 and something (thankyou QI) so many things can be grown here.
Trouble is, the investment and work involved is quite heavy, you can do it for yourself, but not really viable commercially.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
we all mentioned about more people are interested in growing their own fruit and veg for what ever reason, and i have noticed over the last year that the viewing figures for the this board has grown...
when the board forst started we would have about 12-14 viewers ,but now its shooting up to at least reble that or more...Work to live= not live to work0
