Dell laptop not working - warranty just expired!

My daughter (full time student) bought herself a laptop, costing around £600 from Dell online in January 2008.
Yesterday, when using the laptop it started to make a loud clicking noise so she shut it down and turned it back on. However, it would not boot back into windows and just makes a constant clicking noise.
We checked on Dell’s website about the warranty using the tag number and it shows it expired in January 2009 :rolleyes:.
Does she have an argument that the laptop should have lasted longer than this? I would have thought a reasonable lifespan for a laptop would be 3 to 4 years (mine is still going strong after 3 years).
Any help or advice will be much appreciated.

Under section 14 of the sales of good act , the laptop must be durable and last a reasonable lengh of time and be fit for purpose.
As your daughters laptop has faulted and its not a reasonable lengh of time , i would say you have a case. Quote this when you call them next.

odds on hard disk failure there, I'd say. Clicking and no boot usually point to that.
Some drives do fail early - make sure it's not been dropped or subject to impact. We had a corporate HP do this after the "owner" slipped on ice and he and laptop came a cropper.
Hard disks aren't expensive, and on Dells they're a doddle to fit. Try calling Dell support, they're usually pretty good. They even still quite happily support my oldest laptop, at 12 years old. Still on the original hard disk (and by christ it's noisy)0 -
Ditto. Sounds like the Hard disk.
Your daughter may have lost the information on the laptop.
