How can people throw stuff like that away??? In our old house they had boarded up the most beautiful fireplace and as we pulled back the carpet found matching hearth too :T

Oohh I love it when that happens! Our house had plywood nailed to all the internal doors and wood print wallpaper pasted over the top! When we pulled it off all the lovely 4 panel Victorian ones were revealed. People are pretty stupid when it comes to ripping out all the original features in a period house and replacing with modern tat - I'm like a moth to a flame when I see scaffolding and a skip outside a house.

Hi Gang! I'm back again. It's a fab day for me today as I've been to the Thursday morning car boot sale and it's the monthly church jumble sale this afternoon.

There were definately more market stalls than genuine booters this morning but a great chance to stock up on home grown veggies and bin bags if nothing else.

    This morning's finds were:
1960's pair of framed kitsch prints of big-eyed children £2
Cardboard suitcase filled with antique lace, thimbles, thread and a pair of pinking shears - worth at least £15 alone (£1)
1980's tiger print angora sweater £1.00
2 x ski jumpers with animal scenes £3
2 patent leather Kelly bags (made in Manchester!) 40p
Ladies' Max Mara wool-mix blazer - with tags still attached 20p
Stripey Windsmoor satin shirtwaister with mad gold coin print 20p
1970's man's acrylic tank top with sunset design 20p
Crazy 1980's denim dress with studs and lace and huge shoulder pads £1
Full length grey kaftan with ornate embroidery 50p
"House of Denim" lampshade sleeve embroidered dress 20p
Chunky bone bangle with pin fastener (Asian design) and some chunky metal beads with amber stones £1.50 the set
Sequinned clutch bag with satin lining and rope strap £1
12 vintage belts at 10p each - including an unworn Jaeger mustard suede one (which still had the tags attached) and an Escada orange suede one with brass lions heads

By the way, in case you think I'm a terrible hoarder - I'm keeping the framed prints, sequinned clutch, the lion's head belt, bone bangle and metal beads. The pinking shears are for a dressmaking pal whose in dire need and has had mine on permanent loan for the past month. I have a strict rule that whatever we keep has to swapped with at least two items already in the wardrobe! The remainder will be eBayed.

I can't wait to see what this afternoon's jumble sale has in store for us!!
  • I got a lovely Next tartan wool mini skirt today for 4.00, really pleased with it as it will look nice with my new boots.

Weathers looking bad for sat so i think i will be looking for jumble sales and maybe a boot sale sunday.

Sold my Mr frosty i got 2 weeks ago , payed 2.00 and sold it for 15.00 also a keyper (80's toy), payed 50p and sold for 12.00.

My house is still full of clutter but still room for more.

    Sounds like mine!

My jumble sale wasn't too bad, spent a total of £9 and got:

    Guy's pinstriped River Island Suit
    Man's black leather trenchcoat
    1960's crochet mini dress
White leather slouch boots (still in box)
    Paris and Rhodes souvenier scarves
    3 x 1980's oversized ladies' sweaters
    Vintage batwing tie neck blouse
    5 x 1970's brightly printed day dresses
Vintage crepe lime green pleated skirt
    Pair of floral culouttes
    "Full Circle" funky shirt
    Autograph Argyle-knit tank top
"Love Label" jade green skinny jeans
1950's era ladies' tweed duster coat
1980's purple and black striped mens' jeans
    1980's day-glo man's sleeveless teeshirt
    Vintage cotton full pinny
    Hand knitted green gloves
"Island Girl" neon orange nail polish

I'll keep the crochet mini dress, the pinny, the gloves and the nail polish. The vintage scarves will get made into cushion covers and BF gets the Full Circle shirt. The rest will be eBayed.

Hi, haven't posted much on any of the forums but love this one as it gives me hope as a seller lol. I'm never sure whether what we are selling will actually go (even though we have lots of lovely stuff - most of it still boxed and as new) as you get so many people looking at you like you're from another planet when you ask for anything over 50p no matter what the item.

I hold out as I know that there are people out there who are looking for a genuine bargain rather than just being out on the scrounge.

I am sure that some of the things I have would probably sell for a lot more on eBay and have held back some items for that reason. However, I don't get the time or chance to list and to take things to the post office so am happy for someone else to reap the rewards as long as I get something out of it. OH would rather just "get rid" of stuff rather than take it home lol.

Now that it is coming to the end of the summer BS does anyone know of any good indoor ones (or all year ones) in the Bedfordshire area or nearby? Also, how do you all hear about Jumble sales as I always seem to miss them and I used to love going when I was younger.

    TYVM

BTW, not many bargains and never found anything to make me rich but tend to go for the hardback versions (circa 1970's early 80's) of Enid Blyton books (for notalgia's sake) and the older Ladybird children's books. Managed to get hold of an original boxed Labyrinth game for £1 which I was delighted with as wanted one for ages and they are about £10 in Hawkins atm but have yet to look at clothes, etc. as will be clearing out lot of ours at some point (ranging from George to Monsoon and Jane Norman for girls'/women's clothes and all sorts of top men's brands depending on what I can get OH to part with)

Take a look in your local newspaper - ours advertise jumble sales and car boots in the on-line classifieds if you don't want the expense of a daily paper.

Goanmad - do you live in some timewarp zone as you always seem to pick up vintage clothes etc at Car Boots and jumbles? I never see anything vintage just modern day clothes.Perhaps it's teh area the Car boot is in. Perhaps I shoudl try some of the wealthier villages on the outskirts with an older population! :rotfl:

He he he! Looking at my wardrobe you're probably right:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:.

It's the luck of the draw with jumble sales although after years of going I can detect a vintage fabric from yards away but with car boot sales I just make a beeline for the older sellers. I don't look at young families' or trendy kids' stalls - it all tends to be high street/supermarket stuff which just doesn't float my boat.
  • Once again, I would like to thank everyone for contributing to this thread, I can't believe how many replies and views has got! I feel it is time for us to perhaps start a new thread, because this one is getting rather full, and i was hoping if goanmad would kindly start the new one? I have not asked her privately yet, but as she is the queen in the bargains (and you all must agree), and is always coming back to share her latest buys, i think she would be perfect to start up the new thread. If she doesn't accept, I hope that someone else would be kind enough to do so. I will still contribute to the thread myself, but i am never on here as much as i used to be, so you know :)

    Thank-you everyone, Jazmine. xxxxx
